An estimated 24,000 home fires are caused by
electrical failures or malfunctions each year, according to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA).

During Fire Prevention Week, start with a quick check of the electronics and appliances you leave plugged in overnight. ➡️

Check countertop appliances before you call it a night. ☑️

Unplugging them when they’re not in use helps reduce the risk of an internal fault generating heat.

If heat is the main function, unplug it after every use—not just before bed. 🔌

Even when switched off, a faulty device can continue generating heat.

Don’t overload outlets, and check cords and plugs for fraying or damage. ⚠️

If this happens, don’t turn off or unplug the detector. Simply swap in a new battery. 🔋
