I am grateful to announce I have started a new position as a Tenure-Track Professor in Art History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I've been taking time to reflect and process this new privilege. I am so honored to be able to serve my students and community in this way.

The work I do is always accountable to all colonized peoples and all the oppressed people of the world.

As an Assistant Professor, I will continue my research and teach topics related to Afro-American/Afro-Latin Visual Culture, Race, Transnational Solidarity, Decolonial and Liberatory theories, and Museum Studies.

Thank you to everyone who helped me get here. taken in University of California, Santa Barbara by @brisamarie

On September 15th, 2023, I graduated with my PhD. There's been so much going on that I haven't really talked about it, but I am experiencing so much calm, stability, and joy in this new phase. I feel so blessed. Thank you to everyone who wanted me to succeed.

I started my undergrad with a desire to better understand myself. I grew up in Texas to a Black dad and a Mexican mother and I was literally the only Black woman in my house. Being a Black Mexican was new for everyone in my household and by the time I was graduating high school, I made it a personal goal to find others like me. Now granted, I didn't think there were many and in fact I found myself oddly obsessed with the Dominican Republic because that's where everyone assumed I was from anyway. Lol But after my sophomore year in a Latin American history class, I found me. Well, versions of me. All across Latin America. And I started to dive deeper into Diaspora and Blackness and "Latniness." I took all the Afro-Latin classes I could (I mean there wasn't many lol) but one of which was Racial Politics In Brazilian film. There we watched Cidade de Deus, Quilombo, and even Flying Down to Rio. I heard Portuguese for the first time. Tried pão de queijo. But what I loved most about this class was I had the opportunity to witness Blackness, resistance, and resiliance. Not just from a historical perspective but from living Afro-desendants in Brazil. In this class blackness was normal. It wasn't a novelty or a recent discovery. It was life. I felt my little Afro-Diasporic heart sing and from then on I knew I would have to go and experience this world.
