What a brilliant start to our 2026/2027 seminar series! We were fascinated by Professor Shirin Fozi’s lecture on ‘Thomas Stanley and Maurice of Poissy: Memory and Commemoration in Late Medieval Sculpture’. Thank you so much to Shirin for such a brilliant seminar, and to Cathy for chairing! by @bristol_cms

Location: University of Bristol, 7 Woodland Road, Bristol BS8 1TB, Research Space, 1.H020

Speaker: Brendan Smith, Professor of Medieval History, Department of History, University of Bristol.

Title: ‘Pale Reflections: English Enclaves in the Plantagenet Empire’.

Description: In the centuries after 1066 the acquisition by the English crown of territories throughout the British Isles and in France was accompanied by the establishment there of settlements of English subjects. This talk explores the extent to which these far-flung settlements interacted with each other and influenced thinking about subjecthood and the nature of Englishness. #bristoluni #bristolunihums by @bristol_cms
