Britam Connect has paid KES20.5 million in flood insurance claims to 3,038 households in Tana River County for losses incurred during the 2026 long-rains season.

Through Britam Mafuriko, households in Sala, Chewele and Madogo wards received payouts triggered by satellite river-flow data, without the need for individual damage assessments. The solution shows how data-driven insurance can provide financial protection to communities exposed to recurring floods.

The payout was delivered through the Index-Based Flood Insurance (IBFI) project, bringing together Britam, RiskShield, ALDEF, Oxfam Kenya and the Tana River County Government, with support from the InsuResilience Solutions Fund (ISF).
With forecasts pointing to increased El Niño-related rainfall risks during the October–December short-rains season, eligible households remain covered until February 2027, subject to the policy terms.

As climate-related risks continue to threaten livelihoods, Britam Connect remains committed to expanding access to affordable, innovative insurance solutions that help vulnerable communities prepare for, withstand and recover from climate shocks. by @britamkenya
