Today I turn 40. ❤️

And as much as birthdays are supposed to be about celebrating the person whose name is on the cake, I keep thinking about all the people who helped make these 40 years what they were.

I’ve been incredibly lucky when it comes to friendship.

Some of you have known me for decades. Some came into my life much later. Some I talk to all the time, and others I may not see nearly as often as I’d like. There are friendships that have grown and changed right alongside me, and others that belonged to a particular chapter of my life but left memories I’ll always carry with me.

When I look back at 40 years, I don’t just remember places I went or things I did. I remember who was there.

The people I laughed until I cried with. The ones who showed up when life wasn’t particularly fun. The friends who celebrated the good things with me, listened through the hard things, traveled with me, worked beside me, got me into trouble—or occasionally helped get me out of it. 😂

There are people in my life today who knew completely different versions of me, and somehow each of those friendships helped shape the person turning 40 today.

So on a day when I’m supposed to be the one being celebrated, I just want to say thank you.

Thank you to the people who have loved me, supported me, challenged me, made me laugh, made memories with me, and shared some part of these first four decades with me.

Whether you’ve been here for 30 years or three, whether we talk every day or pick up right where we left off after months apart—I’m grateful our lives crossed paths.

If my first 40 years have taught me anything, it’s that a good life isn’t just measured by what you’ve done.

It’s measured by the people you were lucky enough to do it with. ❤️

It can be something you hope I experience, accomplish, discover, learn, let go of, or simply have more of.

Funny, sentimental, serious, completely random—I want to hear them all.

I’ve been lucky enough to collect a lot of people and memories over these first four decades. I think collecting your wishes for the next one would be a pretty special way to start it. ❤️
