Scotland was the highlight of our whole spring. It was definitely a dream trip for us as we met up with @elizabethgadd and @kristopherandres for their artist retreat. On the first day, they took us to Old Man Storr where I captured this photograph of @jenny.j.chen Jenny was such a joy to photograph. She is a self-portrait artist, and it was incredibly inspiring to watch how she moves in front of the camera. The light at this particular moment wasn’t ideal for color, so I immediately envisioned it as a black and white image instead. The higher contrast felt perfect for a monochromatic edit, allowing the mood and form to really take center stage. taken in Isle of Skye, Scotland by @brittanycolt

Kyra and I have created art together many times, and I deeply admire her as a human. I have always been drawn to the patterns of the ice. It amazes me how different patterns and shapes of ice can form. 1. I captured this photograph last winter with my 100mm macro lens. This is a focus stack and I also used my headlamp to light the bubbles and give the photograph depth. Ice bubbles are trapped gas that forms when there is dead fish and other debris in the water. This was a gift to witness since this particular body of water doesn’t freeze over very often. 2. Lake Stars form when slightly warmer water rises through a small hole in thin ice and then spreads outwards through the wet snow/slush layer on top. There is more of an explanation to this phenomenon but I can’t fit it all in this post. I photographed lake stars with my drone as this is a large surface of ice that I captured. 3. During the day the ice is moving creating beautiful cracks and shapes. This particular pattern reminded me of the Bishop skyline with Mt. Tom, Basin, and Mt. Humphrey. Do you see it? 4. I photographed this ice pattern in a small frozen puddle. The soft curves give it a playful feeling. The contrast between the dirt and ice really caught my eye. 5. I found this fractured ice pattern in my front yard. We have a stream that goes through the property that froze over giving me this beautiful pattern to play with. I photographed this ice pattern with my macro lens and focus stacked. taken in Eastern Sierra Mountains by @brittanycolt

Capturing one of Yosemite’s most iconic waterfalls at its lowest water brings a feeling of tranquility. A completely different mood than in the spring with its raging, high energy water. The low flow brings with it a sense of mystery as the rock gains prominence and the silky flow finds its path down these towering walls.
