This is some of the most vulnerable work I’ve ever done.

Held: The Love That Raises Us is a documentary I’ve been quietly working on for years, a reflection on maternal mental health, motherhood, and the journey I’ve walked through without the village I needed.

I found out I was pregnant three months before lockdown. Gave birth with no family by my side. Navigated postpartum in isolation. On the third day of my son’s life, the sky turned red. I was in a hotel alone because our apartment was too hot, and the air conditioner I ordered was backordered like everything else. That moment, like so many others, felt like I was barely surviving.

And still… somehow, I created.
I cried through lives.
I sang through breakdowns.
I turned pain into sound.
And that became The Song Remedy.

I also want to say, this isn’t a slight to anyone.
There were friends who showed up in the ways they knew how.
There was my chiropractor, Dr. Marisa @kanamechiropractic , who supported me through it all.
She was my doula who brought calm and care to a chaotic time.
And I’m forever grateful for her.

But the truth is, I didn’t even know how to ask for what I needed.
I didn’t know how to build a village.
I didn’t have the language, or the tools, or the nervous system capacity to say:
“I’m suffering, and I need help.”

It probably would’ve been too heavy for one person to hold. But if I’d known how to create a system, a structure, a support map, maybe things would’ve felt lighter. Maybe I would’ve felt more held.

This documentary is for every parent who had to figure it out alone.
For those who cried silently.
For those who had to choose between healing and surviving.
For those who didn’t always feel worthy of the title “parent”, but kept showing up anyway.

I’m still growing. Still becoming. Still learning how to raise my child and myself at the same time.
This is what it means to be Held.

I could pick apart my vocals all day, finding things to refine, things to “fix.” But that’s not what truly matters. What matters is the energy behind the offering, the intention behind the energy, the thoughts behind the intention.

As artists, as creatives, we move beyond just ourselves. Our voices, our aura, our essence ripple outward, first into the room, then into the world, and even further through the Internet, shifting the atmosphere in ways we can’t always see.

So to my fellow artists, musicians, and creators: just do the thing. Release it, share it, put it out there. It doesn’t have to be “perfect” to be potent. Your energy changes the chemistry of the world just by existing. #thesongremedy #soundhealing #BrittanyTanner by @brittctann

FYI: when I was editing, this the sped up version did not sound like a chipmunk. It just sounded like my regular voice sped up, so this is hilarious but the video was too long so I had to speed it up. Anywho…. You may be wondering, why is Brittany talking so much?!? I usually like to make my online platforms, beautiful and creative, but I’m in a place in my life where I’m being required to go deeper than that. I have not talked for years. I’ve held things in that frustrated and angered the hell out of me and yes, I’ve processed it in other spaces and what I’ve processed is something that I want to share because I feel like it’s directly connected to my music, my art, my way of life. It’s what helped me to create @thesongremedy The Song Remedy started off as a space to talk about things people were going through, and then we alchemized our struggles, our pain we alchemized that into beautiful healing music. So my goals behind the scenes/ putting time and energy into my mental wellness is directly related to me being able to start a sound healing business. by @brittctann

Because my mind be all over the place I have to either go to a trainer or do very simple no-brainer workouts to stay consistent. Lately, I’ve been focusing on one exercise a day. I do that for as many set as I possibly can (right now that’s about 10 sets). I’m super sore from yesterday‘s lunges so today was really a struggle 😂 I started off being able to do five reps at the beginning of the set and by the end I was only able to do like two 😂 but this has been pretty effective for me. I also have been doing 10 minutes of abs every day. Did you do something good for your body today? by @brittctann

Now don’t get me wrong because I actually feel really blessed to continue to get hired to do soundbaths as well as winning different grants to help support my creative ideas, but I don’t even share that enough so that’s also the point of all of this. Learning to talk about it learning to share what I’m doing, letting people know that I am out here in the world sharing my gift and creating healing spaces for me and my community. Sometimes I just feel like I’m supposed to be doing way more and yes I do need to be doing more in a healthy way, but I’m just learning to be grateful and proud of what I’m already doing and shouting that to the mountaintops! Hey y’all i’m taking full advantage of social media to tell my story in depth 😏 not only do I wanna share my why behind the music that I make but also I want to create a bank of information/wisdom that Kai can always have access to. It may seem overly vulnerable, but I’m realizing I really value transparency. I also think that a lot of trauma is caused, especially in the Black community because we don’t share our stories enough because they may be taboo or it may make someone feel uncomfortable and that’s not necessarily what this post is about, but I just feel like sometimes people cringe when someone shares too much and it has caused me to not share and I just don’t wanna limit myself in that way anymore. I want to share fearlessly. #thesongremedy #soundhealing by @brittctann

Realizing that I’m slowly, but surely building the life of my dreams. Too often I’ve focused on where I want to be in the future. I’m learning to be present/ grateful for what I have and who I am right now. #soundhealer #thesongremedy by @brittctann

I learned a new practice technique that I’m hoping helps me stay consistent 😂 I saw this ADHD piano hack on TT where you practice using lead sheets and only stay on each song for about 5 minutes before switching to something new.

The trick is picking songs that are simple enough that you’re not overwhelmed, but still challenging enough that you’re actually learning. Switching songs every few minutes gives your brain that little “ooh, something new” feeling 😂 while you’re still practicing chords and building your skills.

I literally learned these chords yesterday using this technique, so we’ll see what I pick up next. by @brittctann
