As a speech therapist and children’s book enthusiast, physical books are always my preference!

But we don’t always have the ability to buy all new books for one month of Halloween, and seasonal library books are usually gone in a flash, making it hard for parents to find books on theme for holidays and seasons!

But, @vooks is a GREAT option for free seasonally themed books! Vooks are very low stimulation and a much better option if you choose screentime for your littles (but I always recommend co-viewing and talking about the books while it’s being read)

Again, yes physical books are the best option! And if you can find some at the library, that’s a lovely accessible option too. But, in a pinch, I love Vooks on YouTube 🥳 by @brittmooseslp

If you have a toddler who won’t stop moving, grab a book that keeps them moving 💃

Interactive books are the BEST for keeping kids engaged and attending to storytime.

Here are some of my favorite types, what are your go to interactive books?! by @brittmooseslp

If this is a struggle in your home, you’re not alone!!! Parents, chime in below if you can relate. I think we allllll know a wiggly toddler 🤪

Part 1 of this answer explains that YES! There is a point to keep trying, and that consistency will eventually pay off (but hang in there 🥱)

In Part 2, I’ll explain why interactive books work for this problem and what elements to look for when picking your toddler’s next book! by @brittmooseslp

My most commonly asked question: WHAT do I do when my toddler won’t sit still for storytime?!

1. Keep trying!
2. Pick interactive books like these 🥳

Before you comment, please read:
These ratings are based off my two main credentials: speech therapist + mom.

That means I’m looking through the lens of communication development for:
- does it keep kids engaged?
- will it help toddlers develop new words?
- is it age appropriate?

AND through my mom lens for:
- will they rip this immediately (and will that frustrate me and make it less fun for them?)
- will I enjoy reading it (because THAT matters more than you may realize)?
- am I ready to read this over and over (because that’s very likely)?

Please remember, this is a short form video made for social media, so it doesn’t dive into the WHY behind each. BUT! I read every comment, so please drop a question if you want to learn more about why. And I’m working on a longer form video explaining why, so stay tuned!!

I’m so happy that you are here, but please keep the comments kind. If you like a style of book I’m not wild about, that’s okay! Keep reading ‘em! This video was made to help parents of wiggle worms find books that keep their child excited and engaged in the story. But each child is individual, and whatever style book they love... keep reading!

**for pop up books, I actually love these for language! But as a mom, I know it can be frustrating when they rip the books. If this will bother you, I recommend other styles of more durable books so that you can both enjoy the storytime 😉 by @brittmooseslp

Play Your Way: local places, helpful tools, and more ways to join family-friendly St. Louis adventures.

St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station is a great sensory-friendly outing.

Some things to know before you go:
🐠Bathrooms inside the aquarium use manual flush and paper towels to help with noise sensitivity
🐠You can borrow a Kulture City sensory bag from the ticket counter (they’ll hold your ID)
🐠You can say no to the train and touch exhibits at any time
🐠Calming corner is located upstairs, near the water table
🐠Companion care restroom located on the 1st floor
🐠Some areas have echos due to high ceilings
🐠a social story and caregiver guide are available for free on the St. Louis Aquarium website

We’ve had an aquarium membership for two consecutive years and love it even more now.

Thank you so much to the @aquariumstl for allowing me to highlight the amazing work you do to create a sensory-inclusive space and thank you for allowing me to bring some additional tools to use during the visit. Thanks to my friend @brittmooseslp for joining me, your collaboration, and commitment to an inclusive STL.

A haunted house but it’s just the internet really upset you don’t like a book they love...

And that’s why I included both a slide about a book I love that isn’t universally loved AND a book that’s kinda universally loved but I do not love 😅 Because we are all allowed to love what we love and read what we read! Any book you pick up and read to your child is a great book to me!!

I could go into a loooooong discussion for each of these slides, so if you want the research or more info on any of the super spooky tidbits shared, please let me know!! Happy to yap about how we will end this literacy crisis together 🥳

As always, my posts are never intended to make a parent feel guilt or overwhelm about their reading habits. My goal is to help families build realistic and ENJOYABLE reading routines so that the love of reading forms early and lasts a lifetime 🤍

So if you’re ready to build that routine (or solidify the foundation) together, I’m so happy you’re here! by @brittmooseslp

The perfect way to spend a fall day: with a book 📖 & some apple cider 🍎 from @eckertfarms 🥳

For this episode of Pages and Places, I wanted to share a little more about why reading themed books can enhance the learning AND prepare your child for a new experience 🫶

Because sure, books are fun and a great way to connect with your little one. But they’re also powerful tools for language and social emotional development 🥳

To shop my favorite pumpkin patch themed books, comment PICK!

Did you know that reading books before (and after!) visiting a place can help your child get SO much more language learning out of the experience? 🐠📚

Welcome to Pages & Places! Where we bring books to life by connecting the world around us to storytime. 🌎

Reading about a place before you visit helps build your child’s background knowledge, introduces new vocabulary, and gives them an idea of what to expect. This can make a new environment feel more familiar and help them feel more comfortable exploring!

And the learning doesn’t stop when you close the book! After your visit, rereading the same stories helps your child recall their experiences, connect new memories to what they’ve read, and strengthen the vocabulary they used along the way.

The aquarium is a great place for language development because there are SO many opportunities to build vocabulary, describe what you see, ask questions, make observations, and learn about the world around us. 🦈🐙🐢

Thank you to @findsandfavesstl for inviting me to join her for Sensory Friendly Tuesday at the St Louis Aquarium! I can’t wait for you to see the incredible project she’s working on with @aquariumstl

Want the list of books I read to build on our aquarium adventure? Comment FISH and I’ll send it your way! 🐟

Big Sibling Workshop was a DREAM! Thank you doesn’t begin to cover it, so let’s dive into the story of how this beautiful day came to life:

When I first met @jamieheimoslpc , I could tell we would get along well because we both had a passion for educating and supporting the families in our community, loved all the same small businesses in STL... and we both loved chatting about books and big feelings more than anyone else I’ve ever met!

That’s where this idea for Big Sibling Workshop began, but we wouldn’t be here without Kristen at @totspotsocial empowering us to put this event on two years in a row and hosting us at her beautiful play space.

After a wonderful first workshop last fall, we knew we had to bring it back for a second year, but we wanted to make it even better for families with more resources and more fun. Thank you SO much to @stl.bizbestie for helping bring this vision to life as we planned Big Sib Workshop 2.0!

One way we wanted to add more resources to Big Sibling Workshop is by gathering some of our favorite organizations that center their work around families in St. Louis... our sponsors 🤍

A massive thank you to:
@newmomschool_stlwestcounty
@mommoment.app
@preggoperks
@barronswimschool
@legacyphysicaltherapystl
@fishelchiropractic
@bitesizedpeds
... for believing in this event and helping us build the postpartum village for these families.

But how were we going to keep the kiddos aka the big siblings playing while parents listened to Jamie share her best tips and advice for welcoming baby sibling? Thats where @stl_sitter saved the day with their team of sitters!

We also knew we HAD to spoil these soon-to-be big siblings with all our favorite goodies (aka swag bags 🥳) from @polishedprints, stuffed full of surprises from
@eatdinobars,
@slumberkins,
@hellobello
@swaptheplayroom,
@prekindersinparadise,
@mskarlydances
@monamiepoppy
and all our sponsors above!

But the true stars of the show are the families who came Sunday to learn, to play and to celebrate this big milestone in their lives: welcoming a new baby! THANK YOU for joining us, we can’t wait to see your newest arrivals! taken in St. Louis, Missouri by @brittmooseslp
