It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Happy First Day of Fall! 🍂

As a kid, I loved summer. But the older I get, the more I love fall. This season is when we go visit family in the northeast, where nature really shows off with stunning trees, vibrant scenery, and perfect fall temps.

And although I enjoy connecting with homeschool friends each week, I especially love being home this time of year with books, documentaries, puzzles, warm cups of tea, fun crafts, and cozy meals. This season restores me in many ways, and Lennox and I do some of our best learning during the fall months.

Does fall change anything in your homeschool? Are you looking forward to anything specific during this season?

Second grade homeschool adventures! 🔬🐄🍇

It’s been too long since I shared a homeschool update for the feed, so here goes.

I feel so fortunate to get to say this - homeschooling for second grade has been fun thus far!

Things that have been going well or working:

- Mom time every morning until 8am
(“yes, you can have a quick snuggle and then you have to go” lol)
- Staying consistent with our daily rhythm
- Starting each day with movement
- Taking movement and music breaks after 15 mins of learning
- Conscious parenting my ND, highly sensitive kiddo
- Attending HS conferences, listening to podcasts and audiobooks for professional development
- Tapping into my network to see how we can help each other
- Using multisensory curriculum for my ND learner
- Using multiple curricula and/or supplemental materials for some subjects
- Using the @yotoplay_us Player every day
- Printing our weekly plan on Sunday and checking things off as we go
- Getting library cards for two different library systems
- Living by our calendars
- Making more HS friends and joining a co-op
- Taking our first homeschool group road trip
- The HS group that I’m leading this year!
- Getting back to creating for my Etsy shop

Things I’m still figuring out:

- Scouts, 4-H or both?
- Which handwriting curriculum to go with this year
- What to eat everyday 🍛
- How and why these children talk so much 😅
- How my child is already sick and it’s not even fall yet
- How to get more alone time to meet my needs (introvert mom here) 🎧
- How to do what I love and make a million dollars a year 😆

As you can see, I feel that I have a lot more figured out than not. And being that we started learning together at home four years ago, that is a good feeling.

Overall, I’m very happy to be homeschooling again this year and I will be sharing more of our journey. 💗

What is one thing that’s going well in your schooling or homeschooling world this year?

Last weekend, we celebrated @signedbk with a “She Found Her Main Squeeze” themed bridal shower. My mom and I worked to plan an event that would be as beautiful as she is, and I am so glad that she and everyone in attendance enjoyed themselves.

Not only is Brook going to be a stunning bride, but she and her hubby-to-be, Joe, are going to have a beautiful marriage. They are a special, loving and loved couple, and it was a joy to celebrate them with family and friends! 🥂🤍🍋

In our home, the magic of Christmas isn’t just about what’s under the tree on Christmas morning. It’s about the experiences and fun that happens in the weeks leading up to Christmas. 🎄

Seeing vibrant lights, going to tree lightings and performances, visiting friends and reading beautiful books that celebrate the joy of the season. This year, I created a Christmas Reading Challenge for my family and any others who want books to be part of their holidays celebrations.

This challenge comes with a list of over 50 Christmas children’s books categorized by theme, 40 themed ornaments ready to color, a reading log and a beautiful tree to add ornaments to.

The challenge is also a great way to ensure that your children read at least one book each day of their break from school.

Comment READ and I’ll send you the challenge which is on sale for under $4 right now. It’s also available at the link in my bio! 🔗

My family visited the incredible new Lawrenceville Hopper-Renwick Branch of the @gwinnettlibrary this past week. We had an amazing time learning history in our own backyard!

Historical Note 🗒️

Before schools in the US were integrated, African-American communities formed their own schools to educate their children. The Hooper-Renwick School served Black students in Gwinnett County, GA, from 1941 to 1968.

The building was used for various purposes up until 2016. But in 2016, it was slated to be demolished. The school community pushed to have the building saved and now it houses an educational exhibit and a library.

During our visit, we were blown away by how immersive the exhibit was and all the amazing artifacts that were apart of it. There many installations with oral histories and quotes that left us feeling more knowledgeable about the Hooper-Renwick School story.

If you are local to the area, be sure to check out this beautiful new library branch. There is a grand opening tomorrow, July 12th. But any day is a great day to visit and learn something new! Be sure to check out a new book or 10 like we did. 📚

10/3 UPDATE: Due to the Biolab explosion in Conyers this past week, the Latin Festival has been postponed. I will post the rescheduled date when it is shared.

There are so many exciting cultural celebrations and festivals happening this fall near Atlanta, GA! 🎉

I am excited to take my son to these events to help him learn more about the cultures and people who live in our community. He has been to several events over the past couple years, and he loves learning about new countries.

Before leaving home to attend an event, be sure to double-check details with each host for costs, parking and other specifics.

❓Which of these cultural events would you or your children be most interested in attending?

The last few weeks have been very, very emotionally taxing on me. I have been experiencing a lot of grief due to the loss of extended family members, old friends and family friends. And news of people I care about who are not doing well. I am a very positive, happy person, but it has been a real struggle to show up fully each day.

And to be perfectly honest, I did not want to celebrate my birthday. I am very grateful to see another year because I know people who did not live to see 35. But I wasn’t in the mood to gather, receive gifts and or celebrate. I truly would’ve been content to read, get dinner, maybe get a massage and relax.

So when my sister said she’d get us tickets to a Phillies-Braves game a couple days before my birthday,
I graciously accepted but just thought it’d be a fun family outing.

But shortly after we arrived, she popped up and said, “is this seat taken?” I absolutely lost it and cried for the next 5 mins. 😭

To know that she took time out of her incredibly busy schedule to show up and surprise me for my birthday made my heart overflow with joy that I needed. I was overdue for sister time (it’s been 10 months!) and these last few days have been the absolute best birthday gift and a wonderful way to start my personal new year. 🎂

Major thanks to my hubby, mom, Brook and Joe for taking the time to coordinate this and loving me so well. I’m grateful for my family. ❤️
