Exactly four years ago today, I took a one-way ticket to Hawaiʻi…. a little solo trip.

The plan was to explore for two weeks. Of course, two weeks wasn’t nearly enough, so I extended it… and then extended it again… and then one more time.

And somewhere along the way, I realized I had no intention of leaving.

And I never did.

This island has held some of the happiest, hardest, most transformative moments of my life. It gave me peace and opened my heart more than ever. It gave me courage to face my fears and find my passion in the ocean. It gave me connection to all forms of life and adventures I never imagined, friends that feel like home, a work family that made the hardest days easier, new hobbies I’m fkn obsessed with, (un)healthy addictions to musubi, poke, uni, and ramen, and a place to live out my dog’s happiest days…

This island has challenged me, changed me, humbled me, healed parts of me, introduced me to versions of myself I didn’t know existed, and held me through some of the hardest goodbyes of my life. 🐾

I’ve spent the last 10 years living all over the country, and I never stayed anywhere longer than a year.

I was never homesick.

Until now.

This is the place I find myself longing for when I’m away. And every time I come back, something in me exhales.

I’m exactly where I need to be.

I’m home. 🌺 taken in Oahu, Hawai'i by @brittneyromiski

POV: finding a MF freckle stick on the shelf after I spent my entire childhood trying to figure out how to get rid of mine… 😭

True story: I was SO insecure about my freckles as a kid that I asked my pediatrician how to get rid of them. I swear to ya, he told me the only way was to rub dog poop on my face… assuming he knew I wouldn’t actually do it.

Except I almost considered it.

So… respectfully… unless you spent years learning to love these little things splattered on your face, I’m gonna need you to put that fkn freckle stick DOWN. 😭😂 by @brittneyromiski

10/10 recommend getting bass-boosted by a whale. 🔊🐋

The sounds vibrated through my whole body like the local Hawaii boyz subwoofers!

Sound travels about 4 to 5 times faster in water than on land. That’s why a whale singing miles and miles away can feel like it’s right next to you. You don’t just hear it, you literally FEEL the sound waves rattling your chest like the bass is turned all the way up. by @brittneyromiski

I think about this often… how easy it is to drift through life without ever really feeling it.

Doing what’s expected.
Following the path someone else laid out.
Living quietly, safely, comfortably.

But something in me always wanted more than that.

Not more things…
just more life.

More moments that make you stop and realize you’re actually here.
Feeling everything. Witnessing something bigger than yourself.

Moments like this remind me why I chose the life I did.

Because I never want to just exist.

I want to feel alive. by @brittneyromiski

We had to learn the Manta’s behavior before capturing this shot.

Interestingly, manta rays rarely make just one pass. When they’re feeding, they circle back again and again, sweeping through the water where the plankton gathers.

We watched quietly, studying their pattern before deciding where to position ourselves.

When the moment felt right, we made our drop.

We dove down, held our breath, got into position and stayed as still as we could… trusting we had read their movement correctly.

Still as can be, a few meters deep, we waited.

And then, just like that, they circled right back through, exactly where we hoped they would.

You can’t rush the ocean. It takes patience to learn the rhythm, and with that, you gain something far more important than a photo. by @brittneyromiski

Today marks 5 months since my dog passed away.

Since that day, I’ve tried to make sense of the little moments that surrounded it all. Maybe they were coincidences… maybe they were something more. But they meant something to me.

On his last day, the toy he had been playing with and squeaking all day was a stingray. Later that same day, the doctor who came to my home to help him was wearing a stingray necklace. It was the first thing I noticed as soon as I opened the door. In that moment, I took it as my sign that it was the right thing to do.

This video was taken about two weeks before he passed away. When I came across it recently, I couldn’t help but notice how the stingray glides over my body and slowly moves to my left arm… hovering right above my tattoo.

The tattoo on my left forearm is of his ears.

I’d like to believe it’s all more than just a coincidence… the toy, the necklace, the spiritual meaning of a stingray, and this video from two weeks before he passed.

I read in Polynesian cultures, the stingray is honored as a guardian of the ocean and travelers, offering protection, guidance, and resilience.

Some traditions view them as guides that help navigate the transition from one state of being to another…

The stingray is viewed as a “gentle warrior” that encourages navigating life’s complex currents with grace, protecting your energy, and embracing transitions with trust rather than fear.

For me, the stingray became my peace in letting go. ❤️‍🩹 by @brittneyromiski

Eagle rays are incredibly skittish.
If you chase them, they disappear.

The only way to get close is to slow down, quiet your energy, and become part of the ocean.

And if you’re lucky… they let you share the moment.

And if you’re extra lucky, your friends are capturing it! by @brittneyromiski
