I think about running a lot.
The experiences I’ve had, lessons I’ve learned, joy and heart break of it all; I’d never replace. When you spend 17 years of your life dedicating time and energy into something you love, it’s just like that I guess.
A couple of months ago I was talking to my coach on the phone. We had both just started running again after time off for injuries. We were talking about how hard our 2 mile easy run felt, and how crazy it was that we can lose all our fitness so fast. We also talked about how it must be the “crazy” in us to keep wanting to try again and again, time after time. You’d think we’d reach the point of being so over getting injured and having set backs, that we’d just stop running completely. But not us. Instead we come crawling out of the trenches to chase after our goals and dreams and experience our love of running again. It’s crazy to me that somehow there isn’t a disappointment big enough to make us choose to quit. Returning to running over the years has always felt like seeing a long lost friend. Picking back up right where we left off. I’m sure most people have felt this way before about something.
Today in church there was a message on hope. Our pastor talked about how the hope we get to have because of God is not the “wishful thinking” the world makes it. Instead it’s where we get to be expectant that God’s goodness and faithfulness will show up no matter what. It dawned on me during the service that my running journey has been one of the biggest testimonies of hope in my life. I didn’t even realize that my desire to keep trying again and again was actually me living out and holding onto hope. I get to hold onto this hope and try again and I think that’s one of the coolest things ever! My goals may change too, but to me that’s all apart of the process. Why not keep trying to chase my goals/set new goals that maybe I’ll never reach? I think I’d rather keep holding onto hope and die trying, than to give up on something I love just because of disappointment or setbacks. And maybe the point of this life is truly all about embracing the process and “in-between moments” rather than focusing on the end goal. (Continued) by @brivanv
