The long second civil war in Sudan, between the government in the north and the Sudanese People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in the south, ended in 2005, and South Sudan gained its independence from the north in 2011. Two years later, followers of the former vice-president Dr Riek Machar rebelled against the president Salva Kiir, a mutiny that renewed fighting along ethnic lines. “By contrast”, writes the historian and human-rights researcher Elizabeth Hodgkin, “the period that I spent in Isohe seems like a time of peace – but of course it was not.” Her letters open a window on this remote place. They also remind us of the special properties of the letter- writing genre, where informality can deepen the reader’s sense of exposure to uncomfortable truths…

“In those tatty, rundown theatres of light we drank it all in, intimating that the nostalgia we felt for places and times we’d never inhabited had something to do with our own sense of displacement. We hoped the glamour, guts and glory we found in these other worlds might give us ideas about how to handle ourselves in our own when, under the pressure of cuts inflicted by Margaret Thatcher’s new government, the dismantling of state support for community groups, and new stop and search powers for the police (SUS), London’s streets were becoming ever more jittery.”

Would you believe it, the BRB is a product of South London; you might say it represents a view from this particular world, rather than being a paper exclusively about this part of world. But then along comes the chance to publish a piece like Kate Webb’s essay, our longest piece yet, about Brixton as she lived it, in the, let’s say, significant year of 1981. Some of you will remember it, maybe. Let us know?

Wrangling With Turing: A Talk, Will Eaves describes his approach in visualising how Alan Turing, a material scientist would respond to a personal crisis, and how he might find a place in his functionalist-materialist world view for emotion, pain, and ultimately love. “if you look at a snowflake under a microscope, you see that this beautiful thing is really ‘only’ a lattice of H20 molecules. The trouble is, if you’re trying to look at the pain someone feels, or their humiliation, the qualia of experience (the mind), then what scientific reductionism does is strip out precisely those qualities, along with nuance, bias and opinion, and what it’s like to have an emotion, to get at the objective truth. So: how do you reduce these aspects of mind, without losing the thing you want to study?
