Harvestworks is thrilled to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a special screening of Joan Jonas’s Volcano Saga at @e_flux on Tuesday, June 9.

Joan Jonas has had a longstanding relationship with Harvestworks, collaborating with the organization on numerous occasions throughout her career. One particularly significant collaboration was Volcano Saga (1989), for which Jonas worked closely with Brenda Hutchinson at Harvestworks’ Studio PASS, developing the sound for the piece.

We are incredibly fortunate to have this important work in the Harvestworks archive and even more grateful that Joan Jonas has generously agreed to present this screening as part of our 50th anniversary celebration curated by @sanna.nyc

Join us at e-flux on Tuesday to experience this remarkable work and celebrate five decades of artist-driven innovation and experimentation.

Joan Jonas (@broadcove) explores the complex relationship between humans and the natural world through her multimedia installation, stream or river, flight or pattern III.⁠
⁠
stream or river, flight or pattern III features three videos from Jonas’s travels: mosaic floors in Venice; caged birds in Singapore; a graveyard in Genoa, Italy; redwood forests in northern California; the landscape around Santander, Spain; traffic in Vietnam; and the artist’s home in Nova Scotia. ⁠

Close-up images are interspersed with performances staged in various landscapes, providing a visual narrative that highlights our entanglements with nature. The delicate bird-like forms drifting above were found by Jonas in a village near Hanoi that specializes in traditional kite-making, which she then painted and altered by hand. Surrounding the gallery walls, Jonas has installed various single-line drawings of birds.⁠
