It’s been a tough July with the heat and humidity but we somehow managed to keep it all thriving. The garden has not been as lush as in past years as we lost so much to the past wet, cold, freezing Winter. In the next week I’ll be planting up forty Canna Musifolia. I lost hundreds of them due to the extreme Winter as I do not lift them from the ground. I’ll have to revisit this issue in the Autumn. Life is slow living along this coastal 5 mile barrier island. Not much changes here, but we did get a new paved road in front of our home and there is always a small Towne 4th of July parade. The temps are in the triple digits so garden chores are finished early. The newly planted boxwoods are doing fine and I’ll be inside these hot summer days. The hydrangeas are starting to bloom. It was tough last winter. Cold freezing temps and snow that lingered for weeks and the hydrangeas suffered. We are currently in drought so they are having to be watered constantly. The fountains are constantly cleaned and filled for the birds. The shade garden is coming along with lots of new perennial plantings and I’m happy with how it is looking. It’s been a busy time in the garden replanting boxwoods and splitting hellebores, which was long overdue, with a serrated bread knife. The shade garden is finally filling out with good structure for Winter interest. The front boxwood hedge is getting a complete redo. Can you see all of the sand where it has been dug up? After many years the boxwoods were not being sustained with enough soil, as we live here at the beach. Finally after many tries we have hollyhocks grown from seed! I love having many clematis blooming at different stages from early on in Spring. I just saw my first monarch butterfly of the season! It’s been raining for the last week non stop! The peonies are a bit knackered so bunches were cut and brought in. It’s been a cool Spring and I’m hoping to get flower seeds planted in the next few days.
