There’s a strange assumption about the Northern Territory: once the dry season ends, the Territory does too.

But from September through to April, something else happens. The crowds disappear, peak season prices drop to become more appealing and the landscape undergoes a transformation of its own. In the Top End, the arrival of monsoon rain turns waterfalls into torrents, billabongs swell and the bush erupts into shades of green; in the Red Centre, summer storms transform the desert into an oasis, while the balmy evenings make way for some of Australia’s most spectacular after-dark experiences.

Visiting the Northern Territory's quieter season (September to April) is an insider’s secret that most tourists completely overlook. Find five reasons to make the trip now, at the link in bio. Though the Northern Rivers region has no shortage of luxury accommodation, owners Alita and Lawrence Temple have set out to offer something thoughtfully grounded with the launch of Temple Hangars – four self-contained residences each with a distinctive personality, calibrated to please different kinds of travellers.

Melbourne designer Emily Watson spent most of her working hours fulfilling wholesale orders for big retailers. Earlier this year, she decided she’d had enough.

"There are a lot of positives that come with selling through big retail giants, but for my label’s long-term success, I knew I couldn’t go on at that pace and volume," Watson says.

It used to be that a killer line-up of wines was enough to make a wine bar noteworthy. Now, it’s the bare minimum. The spots in this guide have the food, decor and ambience to match their wines. Many of them are likely to offer your favourite classic varietals, as well as push you to try (and enjoy) the latest in newer drops.
