Food does a lot more than fill a plate. It carries culture, traditions, memories and stories, and it has a pretty remarkable way of bringing people together. One example can be found at Odla, where a trip to Poland inspired a new take on a familiar comfort food. After experiencing perogies made with mushroom and cabbage rather than the potato-filled version many of us grew up with, Lacey came home with a little inspiration. Odla’s version is a love letter to those old-world perogies, made with foraged Saskatchewan morel mushrooms, caramelized sauerkraut, crispy onions and fresh chives, served over house-cultured crème fraîche. It is a dish shaped by travel, tradition, local ingredients and the kind of food memory that comes home with you. We have also seen the connection created through food at the Broadway Community Table. As part of the Community Table, Steep Hill Food Co-op has hosted hands-on cooking classes where participants learn together, prepare food together and then have the opportunity to sit down with neighbours for a shared community meal. Across the Broadway District, restaurants, bakeries, cafés, specialty food shops, and the cooperative grocer introduce us to flavours, traditions and ideas from different places, while creating opportunities to gather, learn and build new traditions of our own. 🍰 It’s National Dessert Day! 🍦 We don’t really need an excuse for dessert, but a fun food holiday seems like a pretty good one. Broadway has no shortage of ways to satisfy a sweet tooth, from handmade baking and gelato to cakes, chocolates and desserts worth making a special trip for. A few treats catching our eye right now include Happy Hi Bakery’s customer-favourite Caramel Apple Fritter, handmade from scratch along with all of their toppings and fillings; Nutana Bakery’s classic Long Johns; and Keepsake Keto’s October Indulgence - Pumpkin Spice Bonbons. Over at Crave Cupcakes, the seasonal Coffee Crisp Cake is available until October 31, while Beppi’s Gelato is serving up its most popular flavour, Big Dog - salted caramel gelato with chocolate chunks. This Thanksgiving, we asked the Broadway BID team what they’re thankful for. 🍂 Jayne: "This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for health, safety and a roof over my head. I’m privileged to have my basic needs met in a city where so many are struggling to survive. I’m thankful to call Broadway home, and to work each day with wonderful people committed to community commerce and culture!" Omer: "This Thanksgiving, I’m grateful for my new life in Canada and for all the people who have made it feel like home. I’m thankful for my family, my job, my friends, and my wonderful neighbours. I’m grateful for the opportunities, the experiences, and the people I’ve met along the way. I’m excited for what the future holds. Happy Thanksgiving!" Sawndra: "I’m thankful for my family and friends who support the busy days, big ideas and everything in between. Your business already has a brand, even if you’ve never intentionally built one. It’s in your storefront, signage, colours, social media, customer experience, the way your space feels and all of the little details people notice before they ever make a purchase. On Wednesday, October 21, Broadway BID is hosting Seeing the Unseen in Your Branding, a free marketing workshop for people who own, manage or work within the Broadway Business Improvement District. Studio Jensen and Craig Medwyuk will lead the session, using local case studies, including Beppi’s Gelato and the Broadway Theatre, to explore how creativity, consistency, branding and world-building can help turn a business into something people recognize, remember and want to return to. The goal isn’t necessarily to change your logo or reinvent your business. 🎶 Broadway Before Us: The Broadway Soundtrack For decades, music has spilled out of pubs, theatres and venues throughout the district. Some of those places are still here. Others exist now in photographs, stories and the memories of people who stood in front of their stages. Buds on Broadway opened in 1983 and remains Saskatoon’s longest-standing live music venue. Its Saturday Afternoon Jam began in 1984 with Big Dave McLean and has given generations of musicians a place to get on stage, play together and develop their craft. Around the corner, Amigos Cantina opened in November 1988 and became one of Saskatoon’s best-known live music rooms. Its stage has welcomed local musicians alongside artists including Sarah McLachlan, Neko Case, Modest Mouse, Broken Social Scene and Propagandhi. Black Cat Tavern continues that tradition. Formerly Vangelis Tavern, the venue became Black Cat in 2018 and continues to make room for original music from punk, metal and rock to electronic, folk and everything in between. Then there was Lydia’s Pub. A longtime fixture of Saskatoon’s music scene, Lydia’s hosted touring acts, local musicians, poetry and countless nights people still talk about. The pub closed in 2013, and the building was demolished in 2015. And, of course, the Broadway Theatre has helped keep live performance at the heart of the district alongside its role as a community cinema. Together, these stages tell only part of Broadway's music story: local musicians getting their start, touring bands passing through Saskatoon, afternoon jams, packed rooms, late nights, and those shows people still bring up years later. I was meeting my friend at Broadway Café this morning for breakfast, as I was walking toward the café, I noticed this beautiful Chevy Impala perfectly situated in front of the café. (Does anyone know the year of this car? 🤷) It just was the perfect setting with all the fall colours and it just made me think of simpler times.
