IRL: Spotted lantern flies have invaded Cincinnati. These are the invasive bugs you’ve heard about on the news and social media recently. They say it’s a major threat to trees and agriculture. I started seeing one or two a couple weeks ago and this is what they look like today, October 7th. These bugs are absolutely everywhere. Like cicadas but worse. The experts say to squish them but there are so many at this point, I’m not sure what to do? This is just one ornamental tree. My neighborhood has hundreds of trees. The park beside it has hundreds of thousands of trees. I’m seeing these bugs everywhere now. How has this gotten out of hand so quickly and what exactly can we do about it? #cincinnati #news #bugs #treestagram taken in Cincinnati, OH by @broitsonething

Djing some doubles today, figuring out what to put into the next set. Get It by @machakimusic and @eraxure versus The Big Bang by @audigyofficial definitely two gnarly tracks on their own. What do we think of them together? Too wild for doubles or are we feeling it?

Tattoo therapy! Got my lines done in the first session. A ghoul playing a freaky pipe organ. Kinda symbolic because I’ll still be banging the keys when I’m old and ghoulish too. This was an original idea, no reference. Details to be continued in the next session. Ink thanks to John Starr in Cincinnati. #tattoo #inked #cincinnati by @broitsonething

How I feel about where your DJ material comes from 🚨 This is a hard lesson most DJs have to learn at some point. Not all music sources are created equal and you can find yourself giving a bad show if your materials don’t measure up to the rest of your dj rig. Like they say, garbage in, garbage out. Listen wherever you like but when it comes time to filling your dj crates, raise your standards! Get the highest quality by buying from reputable sources. Wav files are fantastic if you plan to do production work with the song but if your goal is to simply have a great sounding audio file that loads quickly on cdjs, look for 320 kbps MP3s. Anything less that 256 kbps and you will certainly notice a loss in power. Streaming sounds like a great alternative but the technology is still largely unreliable in real world scenarios so your best bet is to simply own high quality audio files.

I freshly recorded this dj set with some favorite tracks I heard from the lost lands sets plus a few favorites of my own. Riddim, dubstep, colour bass and trap. Check it out on SoundCloud and let’s follow each other! I’ll drop a link in my bio. Just to clear up any confusion, yes I am a dubstep artist but no I wasn’t ready to perform at Lost Lands quite yet this year. Maybe next year! 🙏

Technical tip for upcoming DJs. 🚨 The Camelot wheel has been covered a few times but I wanted to go into a little more detail about the music theory behind it. The Camelot System is a helpful visual and mental tool that has been adopted by many DJs to help find tracks that harmonically fit together. It is an old concept, utilizing the circle of fifths and assigning values of 1-12 with suffix A or B to each of the musical keys of the chromatic scale. When applied to a track list, you can quickly scan to find songs that are likely to easily blend together. The general rule is that you can put two songs together if their key is plus or minus 1 or if you change the letter from A or B or vice verse.

I ran out of time in the video but it’s worth mentioning that Eastern music, experimental music and modes do not fit perfectly with the Camelot system but it does help as a general guide especially when working with a large number of new tracks. Hope this helps a few of you!
