Stankonia - Outkast (VMP Essentials, 2020)

During the months of Feburary thru April, I was on a national 3 month tour, and while in tour van we decided to do some discog dives (shout out @micthesnare), and one of my favorites that we did was Outkast. A top to bottom incredible discog (Idlewild is the Shrek The Third of the Outkast discography: it's not canon nor does it exist), filled with incredible writing, ground breaking production, and heart. For the longest time, my favorite record of theirs was ATLiens, which to be fair often switches between 1 and 2 for me. However, upon returning to Stankonia, it's incredibly stunning to see just how impactful this record was, how groundbreaking, and just how fucking fun it is. This is the VMP Essentials edition, originally released as their October ROTM, and as is the case with all VMP editions: this thing is absolutely gorgeous. The black and white galaxy pressing on this looks stunning, and the heavyweight tip-on gatefold feels so premium, especially with the foil details across the front. Not to mention how crisp the sound quality on this record is, it sounds stunning. The punch and the grit of this record is forward as ever, and the clarity really allows the production to shine. This has been a highlight of my collection for a long time, and I desperately need to get the other two VMP editions of their debut and ATLiens.

From A Basement On The Hill - Elliott Smith (2023 Newbury Comics Repress)

This past Tuesday marked what would have been the 55th anniversary of singer-songwriter Elliott Smith. My partner and I traveled down to the Seaport area of Boston to catch a screening of “Heaven Adores You”, a documentary released to celebrate the life of Smith, and dive deeper into what made him the musician that he was. It was incredibly moving to say the least, and truly put a spotlight on a once in a lifetime artist. Over the past couple of years I’ve found myself doing a full dive into his discography, taking time to appreciate the deepest cuts and subtle details of his most popular songs. That brings me to “From A Basement On The Hill”, the bittersweet finale from Smith. After putting out two major label projects, it feels like a full circle moment with Elliott’s final project landing back on Kill Rock Stars, and it feels like the perfect home for this record. It almost lives in an uncanny valley where we have the stuff that Elliott recorded and had a say in, and the other side of the record where decisions were made by his family and producers. It makes for a entirely unique experience that takes Smith further back down the rock direction that he was exploring with Heatmiser, but still with the same quality that pushed him leagues beyond what he did with that band. It’s bittersweet in thinking about if it’s what he would’ve wanted, which is the debate for the hundreds of posthumous releases we see today. As seen in the documentary, Smith was very direct and had a clear vision for what it was that he did, but knowing the people that were involved in the creation of this and their relationship to Smith, I have full faith that this is a project he would’ve been proud of. I find myself coming back to this record more and more as I sit with it, and I continue to discover more to unpack with each listen.

The Brave Little Abacus - Last Show at the Vic Geary Center (2024 Remaster)

I’m someone who’s very fortunate to be involved in the statewide music scene of New Hampshire. Currently the majority of the scene is condensed in Southern NH, partly due to it’s proximity to Massachusetts, however because of this I really had no clue of it’s existence growing up. Growing up in Northern NH in the middle of the woods, it’s hard to even know what’s going on in the town next door. That’s what took me on the path of production and engineering, learning how to do everything myself because there was nobody else to do it. Once you dive into it though, the state really has a long history of underground musicians, and it’s really just gone through different iterations over the last few decades. There was a huge jam band boom that has moved its way primarily to Vermont, there was a punk/emo scene that’s found a place in Boston, so many different things. It’s easy to write off on the surface, but there truly was, and still is something here. Case in point, The Brave Little Abacus, one of NH’s most well known bands, thanks in part to the internet. Unfortunately, the area has seen a decline in venues, with some of the most beloved (including the Vic Geary Center) ceasing to exist and covid killing the last few remaining off. However, this concert truly showcases the rich history of these spaces up to this moment, and captures a really amazing lightning in a bottle moment for an excellent band. I desperately wanted to have a physical copy of this in my collection for archival purposes, and thanks to Audio Geography (my go-to for amazing lathe cut pressings), I now have a one-off copy. It’s spread across 2x10” LPs, with custom artwork and using the remaster I put out of this record back in January. I originally pursued the remaster because I felt that the performances had so much energy, but the mono recording from the video camera had a hard time capturing that same energy. Cade Earick - The Shining Light of a Million Stars (2023 “Million Stars” Variant)

God, what a journey this album has taken me on. This record is my 2022 album “The Shining Light of a Million Stars”, recorded from September 2021 to June 2022, and put out by @waxmagerecords back in October of this year. The record is based off of my experience of being in a long distance relationship, with everything from seeing a Jeff Rosenstock concert, accidentally greening myself out, and a cover of Transatlanticism, an incredibly important song in our relationship that perfectly summed up my feelings of having to be far away from home. This truly is a special record to me, and Heath absolutely did an incredible job putting this whole release together. The variants look incredible, and are housed in a beautiful tip-on jacket (my favorite thing in the entire planet of earth) along with an insert, all artwork designed by me. This variant in particular is the /25 Wax Mage “Million Stars” variant, and all I can say is that the pictures do NOT do this thing justice, this is easily the most stunning record in my entire collection. As well, @jamievitullo did an amazing job mastering the record, and making sure that it sounded just as good on a turntable as it does on digital, and in many ways better. This whole thing has just been a wild ride, and I’m incredibly grateful for everybody who believed in me and was willing to help put this together, and I can't wait to put out more vinyl in the future. I’m excited to announce though that my artist-exclusive Random Color Handpour variant is going to be going on sale on January 5th over at my merch site (link in bio). As well, I’m going to be announcing a test pressing giveaway here soon featuring an incredible 1/1 jacket from @ampsock_custom_jackets (pictured on the last slide), more deets coming soon!

Collide With The Sky - Pierce The Veil (2018 Tri-Color Repress)
//
Gateway music. Sometimes theres a record that is able to serve as a bridge between what your taste in music was at the time and what you're listening to now; get you hooked like a drug and finding what else can get you a fix, and I had many of those records within my last year of middle school. For context, up until 8th grade, I really hadn't done much music discovery. I was perfectly content with staying in my comfortable bubble of adult contemporary that my parents had raised me on (not their fault, just what I was used to at the time), plus pair that with not having a Spotify account and that doesn't really get you far with discovering new music. However, upon getting my first Spotify account, things seriously opened for me. TPAB and DAMN. were my intros into rap, early Radiohead into alt-rock, Petit Biscuit into electronic, Khalid and WALK THE MOON into pop, and while MCR and Mayday Parade is what got me into emo, Collide With The Sky (specifically King For A Day) is what got me to explore screamo and hardcore music. Now this record is by no means a hardcore album, but screaming in music wasn't something I was used to hearing at the time, plus the slight elements of metalcore that were sprinkled on this record were also mind-blowing. Now all these years later, this record still absolutely smokes. The songwriting and production have aged incredibly well, and the songs on this record never get old, I can still recite most of them from heart. Pierce The Veil will always have a soft spot in my heart for this one, and I'll think of it fondly for a long time.

hey guys! came on here to show off this AMAZING 1/1 liquid-filled copy of "Is This It" by The Strokes, amazingly put together by @newcosmosrecords. this beauty uses two copies of the recent VMP Rock reissue, and looks and sounds amazing. he's an absolute master at making these one of a kind records, and i'm in awe of what he does. be sure to check out and follow New Cosmos for the amazing releases he's doing on his label, along with other labels! his deluxe edition of "What's Your Motive" by The Hails is almost sold out, and there's going to be plenty of other amazing records coming in 2024. This year, I stopped in at one of my local record stores, Music Connection, and came through with a pretty good haul! Cherry Bomb - Tyler, The Creator (Record Store Day 2020)
//
I’ve been a massive Tyler fan for a long time, and I’ve always been very apt to collecting his records on vinyl, and of all of the pressings I own, I think that Cherry Bomb might be my favorite. While it may be flawed and lower ranked when compared to the rest of his discography, I’ve found that this record has aged extremely well over time, and serves as a perfect bridge between Wolf and Flower Boy. While I used to be very much a hater of this record when first hearing it on streaming, this pressing is absolutely what made me appreciate this album. On vinyl this album absolutely comes alive, full of warmth and depth, and serves as an improvement on the sonics on all fronts. As well, the adjusted track-list is also a very welcome improvement. If you have the opportunity to hear this record and/or get your hands on it, I absolutely recommend, even if you’re not a fan of this record. This is THE edition of this record to pick up and listen to, by a long shot.

God's Country - Chat Pile (Newbury Comics Exclusive, 2023)
//
Absolutely brutal, an album that makes me feel like someone stabbed me, twisted the knife, and licked it clean. God's Country is the 2022 debut album from DIY noise rock outfit Chat Pile. It's hard to describe the way this record makes me feel, because its equal parts saddening, terrifying, rage-inducing, and in it's 40 minute runtime, it's bound to make you feel the same way. It's a wonderful follow up to their excellent 2019 EPs, "Remove Your Skin Please/This Dungeon Earth", and continues their winning streak of incredible releases. I also wanna note that this is easily my favorite pressing of the record, sounds great, and the blue and brown splatter against the cream record is the prefect fit for this record. The Flenser continues to push out incredible releases, and this just happens to be one of them. If you wanna feel how it feels to die without dying, this is the record for you, just ask Grimace.

Blonde - Frank Ocean (2022 Reissue)

Cheapo Records in Cambridge, MA. An absolutely wonderful record store, and also the first time I came across a bootleg record, a boot of Blonde by Frank Ocean. Joined alongside Blonde was Endless, Channel Orange, and Nostalgia Ultra, and in this moment of discovery, I opted instead for a bootleg of The Life of Pablo. Since that moment, it was killing me that I didn’t jump for the Frank Ocean boot, and it continued to bug me until I found another boot at Park Ave CDs in Orlando. There was always a small part of me that felt bad about purchasing a boot, however I wasn’t about to pay the $500+ for the Black Friday release, so in that moment I developed two rules: 1) I could only buy boots of albums that didn’t have official pressings, or where the few pressings were way out of my budget, and 2) if an official press/repress came out, I would replace my bootleg with the official thing. This comes from a place where I believe that OG pressings are the way to go, in terms of quality and getting what the artist intended for you to get. So for a long time, I sat on my bootleg copy of Blonde, until one day I was at work, and got a notification that a repress had dropped. Probably the quickest I’ve ever ordered a record, I was in and out under 30 seconds, and after receiving the record in my hands I can tell you it was worth every penny. I know the price tag was expensive, but the quality of this pressing, the thick gatefold sleeves, and tip-on jacket make this feel so incredible and premium, and like so much love went into it. I don’t know if we’ll ever get pressings of his past records, a repress of Endless, or if we’ll ever see another album from him, but I really hope that time comes soon. Until then though, I’ll gladly spin my copy of Blonde.
