Pride Month has arrived, and this year feels a little different.

A few days ago, I turned 30! 🎉

Depending on which gay man you ask, that’s either the beginning of a new chapter full of bright opportunities, or the death of youth. Most days, I choose to believe it’s the former.

If I’m being honest, though, I’ve been feeling a little disconnected from the gay community lately.

Not because I don’t belong here. Not because I think my experience is unique. In fact, I know a lot of gay men wrestle with the same things: body image, confidence, comparison, loneliness, and the exhausting feeling that everyone else seems to have figured something out that you somehow missed.

I think I’ve just always had a harder time finding my footing. I’ve never been particularly good at reading a room. Social cues often feel like a language everyone else learned years ago. Even now, I can still find myself standing on the edge of a conversation wondering how everyone else makes it look so effortless.

And maybe that’s part of what has me thinking this Pride Month. How much energy I’ve spent trying to maintain appearances. How often I’ve hidden insecurities behind confidence. How much time I’ve wasted convincing myself I needed to become someone else before I could fully belong.

This isn’t a request for sympathy. It’s simply an attempt at honesty. Sometimes the hardest things to admit are the things we’ve known about ourselves all along. And maybe honesty is where change begins.

Because despite everything, I remain what I’ve always been: an optimist.
I still believe new friendships can be found. New connections can be made. New chapters can surprise us.

So here’s to my first Pride Month in my 30s. Here’s to showing up as I am. And here’s hoping it’s a memorable one.

and for the umpeenth time, thank you to @talithajonesstudios for the pretty pictures and @ottogiuseppe for the pretty hair
