There's an Indonesian answer to Aesop, and it's called Oaken Lab.

Founded in Jakarta by Cynthia Wirjono and Chris Kerrigan, it treats fragrance and body care as a daily ritual rather than beauty aisle filler. But unlike Aesop's studied hush, Oaken doesn't do quiet. Great design and sharp marketing, worn with confidence.

Their Ubud home is The Stillroom. At Jia Curated this year they built something new: a glowing pink Himalayan salt "Tiltroom". The site is a public park, the trees belong to it, not to the brand, so instead of clearing ground, Oaken, in collaboration with @tuscanymarbles and designed by @spatial.sonata built down into the site, tilting the structure around what was already growing there. When Jia ends, the Tiltroom goes with it. The brief was to leave the park exactly as it was found, as if Oaken had never been there.

I ordered the Cempaka Husk @marak.bali, a cempaka mint cordial and @limoaperitivo, Bali's answer to Campari. Bright, bitter, floral, in that order.

Around the Tilt room, we were the months lured by the light, and the promise of what lies within.

🦜 You'll also find Oaken in the bathrooms at 25hours Hotel Jakarta, The Oddbird, another brand that isn't interested in being subtle either and is the most fun you'll experience in hotel form in Jakarta.

This is the kind of detail we go looking for. Design with real teeth, from a country that keeps being underestimated on that front but constantly astonishes us.

🇮🇩 If this caught your eye, our itineraries will too. Sign up at rasavoya.com to hear about our next Indonesia tour departures.

Jia Curated, Day One of Five 🌊

First lap of Jia Curated done, walking the whole site before settling on favourites.
The FORMAT × Kayou Tori Stool stopped me in my tracks. Named for the torii gate, it's a proper dialogue between wood and metal, stackable and built for flexible everyday use. Simple concept, beautifully resolved.

Also drawn into @exotiscape's world, a Bali-based aquascape and paludarium studio building miniature rainforests and aquatic landscapes indoors. Genuinely different from anything else on site.

And a lovely find at @moonjar_design, tiles by Ana, originally from Ukraine and now calling Bali home. Warm, textured work, a gorgeous glazed wall.

Rounded off the walk with a glass from @sababaywinery, Bali's own, because a proper design crawl calls for a proper drink.

Four more days to go courtesy of @jia.curated.

A day with Made Masak, nomadic chef and forager extraordinaire, courtesy of the Ubud Food Festival, and Tabanan Regency delivered on every front.

We started at Alit's farm, where the living fertiliser machines (Balinese cows, doing their bit) share the land with passionfruit the size of small melons. Huge, sweet, but with none of the tartness you'd expect. Fiona meanwhile found her calling as a foraging faux radio announcer, narrating our experience with her torch ginger (kecombrang) mic with real commitment.

Alit then scaled a living bamboo ladder to reach the palm syrup source, which becomes either alcohol or sugar depending purely on how quickly and how you process it.

Further along, what looked suspiciously like a nest of dragon eggs turned out to be salak, snake fruit.

We foraged a little ourselves under Made's patient instruction, though "helped" might be generous, then handed everything to the local community kitchen team, who turned our modest haul into a proper feast. The kind of day that reminds you why we build these itineraries around people like Made in the first place.

Pantai Cemara, named for the she-oak trees that shade this stretch of coast.

Restaurant culture isn't really a Sumbanese tradition, which makes this beachfront eatery something of a rarity. We came for the Kuah Assam, a tamarind fish soup that's sharp, sour and completely addictive. Worth the detour.

There's an island in Indonesia that most travellers still haven't found. We're going there in July, and we want you with us.

Sumba is wild savanna, megalithic villages, ancient ikat weavers, wild horses and coastline that stops you in your tracks. It's one of the last places in this part of the world that still feels genuinely unguarded.

This is the founding tour of Rasa Voya, our brand new travel company, and we're keeping it small on purpose. Ten days of the real Indonesia, hosted by us and led by local guides who know Sumba intimately.

📅 20–30 July
✈️ Departing and returning Denpasar
💰 AUD $3,999 per person (twin share)
🍽️ Full board, all inclusive*

*Does not include alcoholic beverages or personal items.
** Images featured are all from Sumba but not necessarily included in this tour.

If you've been waiting for a reason to go to Sumba, this is it. Link in bio to find out more, or WhatsApp us on +61 423 321 252.

🦪 My first twelve hours in Sumba last week. I'm at Pantai Cemara, the local word for the pine trees that line this beach, which they gave me a posy of as I departed. From the beach at night looking out across the water, I could see the lights of the fishermen and the pearl farms.

🐎 In the east, you don't have to go far or wait long before you see a sandalwood pony.

🥣 For dinner, I enjoyed Kuah Assam, which is a soup flavoured with tamarind, aka Assam. It was one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted. That was hot on the heels of the Ubud Food Fest. It was incredible.

✈️ Interested? We are taking a small group guided and hosted trip to Sumba, departing from Bali July 20 and returning July 30. Send us a DM and we'll jump on a call or tell you more by email or text.

🏄🏼‍♀️ The driveway alone is two kilometres, winding down through open grassland with two security checkpoints before @thesanubari reveals itself. The slow descent and anticipation sets the tone.

The spaciousness strikes you first. Mature palms, lush lawns, an unhurried quietness, and then that spectacular beach.

White sand, blue sky and bluer water. The beach villas offer elevated, thoughtful simplicity, as though acknowledging that competing with its own surroundings is futile.

Privacy here is structural, not incidental. Surfers have always had a nose for the most incredible remote beaches, and Sumba was no exception. Eugene Tan of @aquabumps found his way here long before most of us.

Now it's the turn of the nature lovers, the culture hunters, and the adventurers. Sumba is an island that runs deep, from the surf beaches of the southwest coast all the way across to the rolling savannah of the interior and then the serious artisanal ikat weaving villages of the east.

Sumba is ready to be discovered. Properly.
