like most theatre kids wicked is so incredibly special to me, it was the first musical i ever really rememeber listening to (at ymca theatre camp) and ill never forget getting into the car after the counselor had shown us idnia menzel’s defying gravity and asking my mom if she knew what wicked was, which she responded “oh do i” and put the cd in the car and since then i was hooked. i’d always had the performance bug, but hearing and listening to wicked for the first time is what got me to start doing community theatre, something that really helped me regain my confidence and my voice after losing my dad. and now here i am 10 years since me listening to wicked for the first time watching wicked as a theatre major. choosing to pursue a degree in the arts. i was so honored to ask cynthia erivo what it meant to her bringing wicked to such a general audience like those who see movies, and i think she said it best, “really really proud.” this post is really just a love letter to 8 year old brooke who i am so proud of and so so glad she went to that ymca musical theatre camp. live theatre is so so special, and im so glad that because of this movie, some little girl out there is going to find her voice too. by @brooke.talbott
