For newer memoirists, bringing your reflective narrator onto the page right after you’ve written a scene is a good exercise. Ask yourself: What needs to be interpreted here? Why does any of this matter? Good reflection stems from your book’s themes, so if you’re struggling to reflect, you might need more clarity on what you’re writing about. by @brooke_warner

Knowing you have something new will keep you tethered to your creativity during the roller coaster that is marketing and publicizing a new book. If you’ve thrown yourself into this world of authorship, a next book is always a future step. Going back to the writing is grounding in moments when you feel unmoored, or like the outside world is driving your relationship to your creativity more than you are. by @brooke_warner

She Writes Press had a beautiful retreat this past weekend for our author community. I wrote about three of my takeaways on my Substack this week:

1. Our community is our superpower.
2. Attention has been commodified, but we get to decide where we direct it.
3. Generosity will get you everywhere.

These are not unique to She Writes Press, of course. Where do you find these takeaways in your own life?

Less than one week from now, I'll be back at Litquake Festival! Join me on October 20 at Litquake Festival 2026 for my session “Memoirs: Writing Against Silence or Erasure.”

At She Writes Press, we see how powerful it can be for women to put their experiences into words—to challenge an inherited story, preserve a history, or finally speak about something that has gone unnamed. This conversation speaks to the heart of that work.

Writing a memoir? Love reading them? I'd love to see you there!

This week’s guest, David Lauterstein, joins us to talk about art and writing and purpose. Lauterstein’s book couldn’t NOT catch our eye. Sodomy Gods is a provocative title, and the point of giving his memoir this title was to make a point, to push readers to think about unequal treatment, and to stand proud. Lauterstein’s company, Nasty Pig, similarly pokes at assumptions, biases, and shame so often attached to queer sexuality. He and his partner, Frederick Kearney, launched the sex-positive brand in 1994, at the height of the AIDS crisis, when celebrating gay identity was itself an act of resistance. In this conversation, we talk about writing through grief and defiance, building something bold out of love and loss, and what it costs to tell the truth about who you are, and what doing so makes possible.
