I was so sad to miss @chadvangaalen this time around on the island, so here is a cover (boss RC 30) I've been including in my set the past few years.
I used to sneak out (a lot) and I often got caught (she must have been at a party)- many times I was waiting for rain- so I could be an angsty teenager and run full tilt to the neighborhood park while I listen to red hot drops and then once I got to the swing id listen to Kate Nash. The Ferryman

I met a ferryman one spring and his weathered six string for two
I watched the wildflowers face the sun but I swear they faced him too
He sang to dogs and passing strangers,
like he’d known them all along.
I remember even silence
seemed to lean into his songs.
We spoke of old forgiveness, of things we’d carried far & long. I lay there in the river, and felt something come undone.
Like a seam slowly unstitching, a thread pulled clean and free. The water held my body, while the warm light loosened me.

And I thought I’d found my home there, in the dappled shade and light, with my freckled head upon his shoulder at the edge of our long nights.
But ferrymen are strange creatures,
they belong to tide and foam,
they can show you where you’re going
Yet leave you to go alone.

Now they say your name before I do, I hear stories at the shore. Your ghost walks through the town some days, though it’s never been home before
Some nights Ill still go looking where the river meets the sea, wondering if the ferryman ever thinks of me.

I carried pieces of your sorrow, I carried pieces of your pain. I carried them so far, my love, we drowned beneath the weight.
But the river keeps on moving, so the oracle must be right, Nothing that is meant to stay requires me to hold this tight.
I’d gather all my prayers back, pull them down from out the blue. I’d spread them on the kitchen table and rearrange them to show you.
I trusted my gut completely, but my gut was wrong somehow. Some wounds don’t close when they’re supposed to, they learn to travel out.
Ouch

So I’ll tell it like a story,
set to harmony and rhyme,
to the metronome of my heartbeat
caught in imperfect time.
I met a ferryman one spring. That much will still be true. And though he never carried me home, he showed me where home grew.
And if someday he turns around, if the water brings him through, he’ll find the door is open still, with a light on and a 6 string for two. by @brookebathandbeyond

This is a live recording of a song I wrote deep in a nostalgia spiral about when I was 16 and would sneak out and simply turn my angst into a search for the thrill. It’s about being naive and too trusting. About the lure of escapism, the lure of knowing you’ll be making the wrong decisions.
