5 years ago, we unexpectedly lost my nephew, Ashton. 💔

I’ll never forget sitting at his memorial and hearing story after story about the good he quietly did for others. One that has always stayed with me was hearing that he bought new clothes and winter boots for an employee who had been wearing boots with holes in them. That was Ashton…seeing someone in need and doing something about it.

That day was filled with heartbreak, but it was also one of the clearest times I have ever felt God’s presence.

On our way to the funeral home, our GPS somehow led us to the wrong place, a random parking lot. As we tried to figure out where we were, we noticed a mural on a building with Psalm 23 painted across it.

It was the exact verse on a mug Dave had searched for to give my sister the night before, hoping it might bring her even the smallest amount of comfort.

Then we finally arrived at the funeral home. As we walked toward the room where we would say goodbye to Ashton, we passed a Bible displayed behind glass.

It was open to Psalm 23.

I still get chills thinking about it.

Five years later, my heart still aches thinking about a life that should have had so many more years. And as a Mom, it breaks my heart knowing my sister had to do the unimaginable and say goodbye to her son.

I will never understand why some things happen. But I will never forget how God met us in our grief that day.

In one of the darkest moments of our lives, He gave us little reminders that said, I’m here. I see your pain. You are not alone.

Five years later, I still hold onto those reminders.

I saw some vintage nutcrackers at an antique store the other day and it made me wonder… why don’t we do this anymore?!

Growing up, we always had a bowl of nuts and a nutcracker sitting out. I can still picture my dad watching TV, cracking nuts one by one. It’s funny how the simplest childhood memories can feel so meaningful years later.
