Still love returning to this work we did at @android with @i_d. Some of my favorite work was building Android’s Global Creator Programming. A 0-1 body of strategic work that would shape Android and partner content, the talent we worked with and how we tell real stories of how technology can unlock creativity. This work with ID, some of my favorite Googlers, and the incredible creative team and talent was such a great and memorable example of how to show up with talent, support creativity and how we could contribute meaningfully to an editorial vision (Google, Samsung & ID 2022, credits on end slide) taken in New York, New York by @brookepersich

Repost from @googleartsculture
I feel proud and honored to have worked with renown contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang (@caistudio), his team and Google on a short form documentary about his work and the history of Gunpowder. I felt even more honored when I was invited to have an incredibly tiny part in assisting the stencil process (you can see my cameo appearance in the doc.) Watching Cai work was truly a captivating almost meditative experience that I won’t forget. I’m so glad this piece of film is released! We’re live!

I know we’re tired of hearing about AI, but I’m not asking you to give your valuable mental space or optimism to the technology of the future. I’m asking you to invest both in us.

The ideas explored at Studio Machine reflect a simple belief: That we can use this moment to become better humans, not just build more sophisticated machines.

When we’re willing to sincerely try at that, we have an excellent chance of keeping what we love and changing what we don’t. Of creating to our potential, not just our current capabilities, and contributing to a world we see ourselves reflected in.

It’s not always easy to feel optimistic about the future. There’s enough evidence to the contrary.

But as Nick Cave once said:

“Hopefulness is hard-earned, makes demands upon us, and can often feel like the most indefensible and lonely place on Earth.... It says the world and its inhabitants have value and are worth defending. It says the world is worth believing in. In time, we come to find that it is so.”

The world is full of tutorials and discussions on how to use AI tools, but is there enough dedicated space for the discourse to explore what it means to be human in a world where AI can simulate and substitute for human connection, expression, and judgment?

Culture-First AI work suggests that responsible AI initiatives extend AI literacy beyond just practical instructions to include creating space for the very human questions technology evokes.

What an inspiring morning at @unesco with a selected group of ambassadors, academics, researchers and tech leaders.

While there were so many interesting and impactful discussions, I was particularly drawn to a notable theme that deeply ties into my work with Culture-First AI: the need for new and different metrics for technology for good. To truly build a fair digital future, we have to explore ways to include the things we currently value but aren’t easily quantifiable. Things like cultural nuance, heritage, and human context.

Proud to be in the room, bridging the gap between tech innovation and this critical call to ensure the unquantifiable parts of our identity are never left out of the equation. 🌐 taken in UNESCO HQ In Paris by @brookepersich

I started Culture-First AI because I saw this technological shift as an invitation to explore what it means to become better humans, not just build better machines.

And beyond technical language or cultural theory, that’s really what this work is about.

Like everything within this field, this is an iterative piece of work and I evolve and refine my thoughts just as quickly as the industry seems to move.

However, my hope is that this clarifies the positioning of this body of work, why I write and why I think it’s such a worthy exploration right now.
