The final taught portion of my master’s was a course called “Conservation in Practice.” For this course, UCL (incredibly and graciously) funded a five-day field-based module in collaboration with @institutoipe to learn about the complexities of people-centered conservation initiatives in the Lower Rio Negro Protected Area Mosaic.

Everytime I sit down to write about these five days, I’m left looking at a blank page. This isn’t great for my summative essay of course, but speaks to the transformative nature of this trip. How am I supposed to encapsulate such a rich, complex, and impactful experience without flattening it with words? I have no idea.

So in an act of procrastination masked as “brainstorming” I’ve put together this collection of moments, journal excerpts, and quotes from the local team, and the “Flourishing Diversity Manifesto” that begin to share a little glimpse of the experience.

Sending a huge thank you to everyone who made this experience so meaningful 🫶🏻 by @brookeraines_

✨🌊 NOW LIVE ✨🌊

We’re so excited to share that our latest Far Together film is now live — A Day of Coastal Foraging with Soultee UK.

This film is such a fun one and marks our first story exploring food systems and local bioregions in the U.K. We can’t thank Billy and Finn from @soultee.uk enough for sharing their home, knowledge, and passion for the Cornwall coast with us.

Head to the link in bio to watch it now 🎥⚡️ by @brookeraines_

Why do we hike?

The truth is even if we listed out all of the reasons why we hike, it would only begin to scratch the surface of the real magic that is made when we’re out there together on the trail.

Foster the Earth is many things — a non-profit, a community, and most importantly a family.

#GivingTuesday is right around the corner. Next Tuesday through the end of the year we are fundraising to raise $5K to purchase new hiking boots for our 2026 participants.

Follow the link in our bio to donate and help us keep making expeditions like this one possible 🏔️✨
