hey friends, i was tagged in this "my name as tropes" booksta challenge/trend by my bestie @melissathebookaddict and i thought i'd take part and also do a little meet the bookstagrammer refresh since it's been about a year since my last one, and there's a ton of new friends here! 😊

so, hello pals, im brooke, and welcome to my bookstagram! i am a 25 year old mama from Canada, and here's a few fun facts about me

🧸im going back to school (online) in the fall to work towards becoming a teacher
🧸i am a big cartoon lover (some favs are miraculous ladybug, gravity falls, the owl house + adventure time), and a big kid at heart
🧸im a gamer girlie (switch and PC)
🧸i love traveling to beautiful places and creating memories with my family
🧸i have 3 cats 🐈‍⬛️🐈‍⬛️🐈
🧸music means a lot to me and one of my fav artists is melanie martinez (who i finally saw live summer '24!) and one of my fav bands is 5sos
🧸i hated reading initially all through elementary school and grew to love it in sixth grade
🧸i love roller coasters and amusement park rides
🧸i love a story with found family, adventure, banter, that ultimately ends in a HEA
🧸my fav drink is an iced capp made with oat milk from tim hortons
🧸winter and fall are my fav seasons, although this year spring is really growing on me!
🧸i am equally terrified and deeply fascinated by tornados (i blame living in tornado alley as a child for this conundrum)
🧸i love purple
🧸i would love to become a published author one day

✊🏽𝑹𝑬𝑨𝑫𝑰𝑵𝑮 𝑰𝑺 𝑷𝑶𝑳𝑰𝑻𝑰𝑪𝑨𝑳✊🏽

my heart is heavy over what has been happening in the USA. the blatant public executions. abductions. fear. it's absolutely heartbreaking. im not even sure i know how to find the right words, my heart just breaks for everyone hurting and being harmed every single day💔

i am canadian and i live in a border town, i can see the USA right across the river, but i have not crossed the border in nearly a year. it doesn't feel safe to anymore, and this week 🧊 has been reported being present at our border. i am also indigenous and there is a travel advisory currently warning indigenous canadians crossing the border into the USA. i fear for myself and my baby if i cross at this point because apparently 🧊 can do whatever they want at this point no matter what the law says; and that's terrifying.

i know this is a book account, but the fact is, reading and books will ALWAYS be political despite popular belief, and i will always use my voice to advocate and fight for change. how readers are reading books like the Hunger Games, and missing the entire point of the story is beyond me.

i want to make myself extremely clear, i do not support 🧊, i do not support 🍊 or this administration. i am beyond angry at the current state of my neighboring country. so much needless violence and fear, it needs to end. use your voice! speak up! don't bury your head in the sand! books are political! reading is fundamental!

🧡🪶INDIGENOUS LIVES MATTER🪶🧡

today im coming at you with a bit of a different post. for those of you who don't know, i am a wolastoqiyik indigenous woman, and last night my community was rocked to its core in a way it never should be, by people who are supposed to "serve and protect".

a man from my community was tased, then shot multiple times, and was killed by an RCMP officer last night, in front of his partner and his children, inside their own home. there were no de-escelation techniques used, and our trained professionals on sight in the community were not contacted to assist either. lethal force was used. lethal force was not necessary. such a violent act was not necessary. traumatizing those poor children was not necessary. instilling fear in the whole community, making them feel like they cannot call the police if they need to for fear of being shot is not necessary.

my heart is absolutely broken for his partner, his children, his family, his friends, and our entire community. this was not necessary. the already dwindling trust our people had for the police is further eroding as these situations keep happening. i am angry. this is unacceptable. these situations should not be happening anymore.

since 2020, four indigenous people have been killed by police in New Brunswick. indigenous lives matter. something has to change. indigenous lives matter. all lives can't matter until people of color's lives matter.

stand with your indigenous communities, amplify indigenous voices, read indigenous authors, fight for change. the racism and violence needs to end. indigenous lives matter!

EDIT to add disclaimer: i am aware of Thomas King recently sharing that he found out that he does not have indigenous ancestory, i do as an indigenous person still find value in his books however!

🧡𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔🧡

today, my daughter and i spent time in nature, respecting the land and the environment we are so fortunate to have. we listened to indigenous stories read by our family members, about our history and orange shirt day. then we explored some of the children's books in our personal library that are in our language (wolastoqey). after that, we sat down for a homemade snack, grateful to our ancestors for perseverance and mother earth for this beautiful day, and we read our personal book picks of the day because thankfully, despite the horrific tragedies done to my people, we are still here and have the abiltity and freedom to do that 🧡

looking back at the atrocities committed to my people, my own family included, i hug my daughter a lot tighter because i cannot imagine how soul destroying having her stolen from me and treated that way would be. something no one should have ever experienced.

i plan to make a separate post later of some of our indigenous children's books we have collected thanks to our family🧡

with so many things coming up to celebrate, i decided to get myself a little treat from @bookoutlet to cover them all, while also ordering some christmas prezzies for my babies🤍 so, this stack is to celebrate starting school still despite everyone thinking i wouod back out because im pregnant with a toddler, the birth of my second daughter in november, my birthday in december, and christmas of course ... and also, just because the last few months have been really freaking hard on me and has been the worst summer of my life; i had to cover all my bases 😌🤭

in honor of today being the first day of school and the new beginning of my pursuing a career in teaching, here is my first teacher themed crewneck 🥰

the first day of university, though i am doing it all online, still feels so surreal to me. i have graduated college 3 separate times, and i never thought i would end up in university, but thanks to the bridge program, here we are! ✨️

gonna be doing lots of school related reading for the foreseeable future, haha 📚

the mornings are darker, the air is crisper, i need a sweater or pullover in the kitchen in the morning now, it feels like hot chocolate weather — the ber months have arrived, and fall is coming🍁

im so happy the heat of summer is finally dissipating, making way for my favorite time of year!😍 everything cooling off will make it much easier to get ready for baby 2 as well now that i won't be roasting downstairs, which is good because I only have a couple of months left🙈

aotd: i love going to pick pumpkins at a pumpkin patch, apple picking, hayrides, corn mazes, driving to look at the pretty leaves changing, jumping in leaf piles, decorating for Halloween, watching cozy halloween/fall movies and shows, cozy fall outfits get to come out (SWEATER WEATHER!!!), reading fall/spooky books- to name a few hehe 🎃

i am so sad to hear of the passing of the legendary, Dolly Parton💔 my daughter is fortunate enough to be a recipient of Dolly's legacy the @imaginationlibrary since she was 6 months old, and we have loved receiving a new children's book every month to read together to help foster that love of learning and literature📖

Dolly will be deeply missed by many, and remembered forever for the amazing woman she was❤️‍🩹

this morning, im planning to have a cozy breakfast, book, hot chocolate, and homemade pumpkin chip cookies🍪 then i plan to clean up clothes, collect more to get rid of and work on readying my baby's room 💗 im hoping to work on this in the morning because with the heat lately my house gets too warm to do anything like that in the afternoon as the entire house isn't air conditioned🔥
