A little bit of life lately. Balancing school and both my jobs. Looks like a lot of groggy mornings. I started running more, going gym more, being more selective of who I share my time with, moved into a new place last month, bought a car. I’m on that I get to > rather than I have to. My little life in Hawaii. The year of knowing this place, and this version of myself. The barefoot woman who spends her time under the sun, in the cleansing blue waters, and where the priority is often friendship and laughter. That’s the beautiful gift I have been provided. And you know what’s the the best part about it? I can return to it anytime. I worried that I had wasted a year in limbo and in indecision… but really I chose this place wholeheartedly. To the point I was willing to endure the discomforts of this lifestyle. The fluctuations, the uncertainties, the goodbyes, the fight for inner connection and stillness amongst movement.

“Why? Why? Why?”, I often asked.

Oh, but I know why. I’ve received a gift wrapped in mystery and uncertainty. An intricate packaging that requires a very special key to un yield. The most special gifts are often hidden by a very windy maze.

I am a woman who spends most of my time trying to understand my life. Lately I have been questioning it more than usual. Why have I spent so much time in Hawaii, when at times it is extremely challenging for me? Why am I trying to understand this foreign concept of home, when I don’t fully know what it looks like? Why is it that I once found Hawaii to be a place of ease, and relief, yet now associate it with struggle and sometimes exhaustion. I’m learning that I can’t expect a beautiful place to eliminate struggle. I hate when people refer to Hawaii as paradise, because although it’s filled with the beauty and riches of its people, there’s still so much hardship. In the history, in the present, and within me. It’s hard for me to explain really, because I love the island so much, and care about it so much that I defend it, I chase it, and simultaneously run away from it out of fear of losing it. But I think since I love it, I understand it for what it is. Not paradise. But land that has helped me understand myself through many different lenses. Land that has showed many people different truths. Not all pretty either. But, that’s what’s wonderful about truth, is how multidimensional it is. Anyways, here’s to long captions. I’m tired of keeping it brief. Oh yeah, and thanks to @ariana.pereny for taking this dope photo of me on NS. taken in Kingdom of Hawai'i by @brookethebackpacker
