Some moments from a summer I wish had never ended.

Berlin’s a weirdly bi-polar city, change is about the only thing certain here. On that note, I’m very excited for autumn leaves and the winter everyone keeps warning me about 🤣 taken in Berlin, Deutschland by @brookewhatnall

Had so much fun these past few months diving back into #filmphotography, especially black and white. Went out on a flat grey rainy day in Berlin, pushed a roll of #trix400 by 2 stops and the results turned out beautifully.

Shoutout to @030filmlabde for being amazing for all things film

Had an amazing time photographing @raw_image_live last week in #berlin

Found this spot completely by accident - a brutalist gem hidden on the U5 in Berlin. Massive concrete slabs, minimal lines, perfect photo spot. Fits well with the shift towards #blackandwhite_photos photography that I’m enjoying more and more these days.

Keen to work with more local artists — whether that’s portraits, press shots, or something experimental you’ve got in mind. Flick me a message, would love to chat about what we could make together.

Really excited with how the shots turned out from a portrait shoot with @hunter__hts and @theratttttt - two very promising artists helping shape Christchurch’s thriving techno scene.

Excited to be back in Berlin, and looking forward to collaborating more with local artists and creatives. DM if you like my work and would be keen to discuss a shoot, refresh of artist press photos ect.

A woman on a bicycle threading between a city bus and a row of vending machines. Two women in striped yukata walking down a restaurant street. Two men at an izakaya counter. One man on the train, reading a newspaper.

Japan in monochrome strips out the colour that usually does all the work and leaves only the geometry and the light and the people in it. The bicycle shot I keep coming back to. There is something about the compression of it, bus on one side, vending machines on the other, a gap just wide enough for a person on a bike, that feels like it describes a whole city in a single frame.

The newspaper is the other one. Everyone else on that carriage had a phone. He had a newspaper, folded in half, completely absorbed. Small act of resistance or just habit. Hard to say.

The entrance to Omoide Yokocho at blue hour. Akihabara after midnight, JDM sports cars parked under the neon. A girl in tie-dye crossing Kabukicho alone.

Three Tokyo neighbourhoods, three completely different cities. Omoide Yokocho, Memory Lane, has been squeezing people into its smoke-filled yakitori bars since the 1940s.

Akihabara has been reinventing itself every decade since, from postwar black market to electronics to anime to whatever it is now, a city within a city that never quite settles. Kabukicho just runs, loud and lit up, all night.

Tokyo at night has a different gravity from the daytime. The crowds thin just enough and the light takes over and suddenly it is all colour and movement and the feeling that something worth photographing is happening everywhere at once.

Japan does this. You turn into a completely ordinary street and something vivid and slightly surreal is just sitting there in a car park, under a utility pole, in front of a brick wall. The bike is the 40th anniversary edition of Kawasaki’s Ninja, in the original racing colours the brand built its reputation on. It is a ridiculous, beautiful object. The man next to it appears entirely indifferent to this fact.

I took this on a family trip and spent most of it doing exactly this, wandering off and finding corners of the city that felt like they had been arranged by someone with a very good eye and no interest in being credited for it.

21st Century Museum of Art, Kanazawa. Two people on opposite sides of the courtyard, neither looking at the other.
The building is by SANAA, the Japanese practice founded by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, and it is one of those rare pieces of architecture that changes how people move. There is no obvious entrance, no hierarchy of facades, just a circular glass building that sits in the city and invites approach from every direction equally. People tend to slow down inside it. They stand differently.

I was on my way in to see the permanent collection and stopped in the courtyard and did not move for a while. Whatever was happening between the two people in this frame I have no idea. The building had probably already decided for them.

Hibiya station, Tokyo.

Two men on their phones. One man looking at the ceiling.

I shot this on the Tokyo Metro during a family trip, the first time I properly fell in love with street photography. I had a small Fujifilm, no particular plan, and a city that made it almost impossible to point a camera in the wrong direction.

The salaryman commute is its own institution. The long hours, the packed carriages, the phones held up like small glowing shields against the gap between the office and home. What the man in the middle was thinking about I have no idea. There is something in his expression, not distress, not bliss, just a kind of profound internal departure, that I have been trying to read ever since I took this.

Tokyo was the first city where I felt genuinely invisible with a camera. Whether that says more about Tokyo or about me, I am still not sure.

Floor-to-ceiling cages. Every one of them a different song.
I was in West Java in 2018 as the FAI’s official photographer for the paragliding events at the Asian Games — the first time the sport had appeared in the programme. In between competition days at Gunung Mas I rented a scooter and went looking for the place itself. The markets in the valley towns were the kind you find throughout rural Java: unhurried, stacked high, full of things you don’t quite expect.

Manfred in his studio with a grain bucket. Manfred in his paddock with an emu, laughing. Manfred nuzzling a wombat like it was the most natural thing in the world. Because for him, it was.

Manfred Heide came to Australia from Austria and made the Adelaide Hills home. In 1976, he and his wife Helen began taking in injured and orphaned wombats — animals most people only ever see as roadkill or behind glass. They kept at it for more than fifty years. By the time his work was formally recognised with an OAM in 2020, he had raised and released over 449 of them. His property became known, with some affection, as the Wombat Hilton.

I first photographed him as a teenager. A journalist staying on a nearby farm had found Manfred for a story in a German magazine and needed a photographer. I came along, barely knew what I was doing with a camera, and immediately understood I was looking at someone extraordinary. A few years later I came back and photographed him again for The Advertiser.

He is one of the warmest, most gentle people I have ever met. The animals knew it too.
