If your income is lumpy, here's the rule that keeps the IRS from wrecking your year.

Save 50% of every dollar that comes in, in a high-yield savings account, for at least 15 months.

Can't do 50? Do 30. Can't do 30? Do 15.

The point isn't the exact number - it's that you stop avoiding and start planning for the inevitable…taxes.
