Category is: artworks most likely to give you nightmares. We'll go first… In this visionary image derived from the New Testament, artist and poet William Blake expressed feelings about his own tumultuous era and the universal battle between good and evil. Commissioned by his patron Thomas Butts to represent the books of the Bible, Blake created this watercolor based on a passage in the book of Revelation. While Blake made three other paintings featuring the dragon, this is the only one in which the beast’s back dominates the composition, emphasizing the scale of evil that the dragon represents. FUN FACT: This watercolor became a cultural icon after its appearance in the 2002 movie Red Dragon, based on Thomas Harris’s 1981 novel introducing the character of Dr. Hannibal Lecter. 📷 William Blake. Every day is cat day, if you ask us... 🐈 Throughout “Art of Manga,” you might notice illustrated cats drawn by some of the featured mangaka found on the walls in the exhibition. A handful of these cats can even be found in the manga panels on view! The recurring motif of cats—be it in manga or the reproductions on the exhibition walls—represent the moral support that cats bring to many mangaka, whose daily work requires solitude and discipline. Happy #NationalCatDay, everyone! 🎟️ Plan your visit today to see these influential manga artists’ feline friends and this art form up-close through the link in our bio. #ArtOfManga #BrooklynMuseum #manga #cat by @brooklynmuseum
“Manga… you don’t read it, you feel it.” –Chiba Tetsuya ♥️ We have lost a true pioneering manga artist, Chiba Tetsuya, but he remains the undisputed master of manga in Japan. Famous for evocative storytelling and character development, Chiba is also widely recognized as one of the most important contributors to the rise of sports manga. “Chiba sensei was a giant and cared deeply for freedom of expression, no censorship, peace, and for all the underdogs of this world.” says Nicole Coolidge Rousmaniere, Deputy Director General, MOA Museum of Art, Mokichi Okada Art and Culture Foundation. We are honored to have the chance to represent Chiba’s work—including the first and last pages of “Ashita no Joe: Fighting for Tomorrow” and pages from the manga diary he was currently drawing, "A Diary of a Quiet Life"—on view in “Art of Manga.” We hope you’ll take the opportunity to visit to see what makes his work so unique and beloved. 📷 “Hinemosu notari nikki”; ©Tetsuya Chiba/Big Comic (Shogakukan) → Fall Fête, 2026.
