This is possibly the discovery of the year from our archives: handwritten notes and a map dating from the early 1700s that provide evidence of where the original Broughton Hall once stood. While the present-day Broughton Hall dates from 1597, an earlier home for the Tempest family is known to have existed from the 13th or 14th century. The documents suggest it may have been protected by a moat, probably created by diverting the nearby beck.We are continuing to explore this fascinating discovery and hope to share more as our research progresses.Well found Sue 🔍#HistoricHouse #ArchivesOfInstagram #OldMaps by @broughtonsanctuary

Watch to the end for a close up look at the beaver’s teeth…Why are they this colour? A beaver’s orange-fronted incisors get their rust color from an iron-rich coating. This iron substitutes for calcium in the enamel, making the front teeth highly durable, acid-resistant and significantly stronger than normal teeth.Like human fingernails their teeth never stop growing. Constant gnawing on trees and branches keeps the growth properly trimmed; if they don’t chew enough, their teeth can grow too long and become entirely useless. By the look of our woods, there is little chance of that for our beavers. To experience Broughton’s wildlife book a holiday, or join us at The Broughton Immersion, a four day retreat from August 20th-23rd. ✨#Beavers #NaturalWorld #NatureHoliday #RetreatYourself by @broughtonsanctuary

Students foraged for leaves and got straight down to the business of ecoprinting elementals, understanding the process, asking great questions and then producing stunning results 🩵well done everyone!! Beautifully modelled by dear @joanmurrayknitware ( last slide)What a great setting - so lovely to use the space to connect with each other and with nature in a deeper way. Just a little bird weaving her nest… Such a treat to be spending every day beneath these tree guardians, with beautiful local, natural materials in my hands. Sometimes working with music but mostly with silence, because really - how could we ever do better than birdsong?!Shrine / Prayer space work in progress during my time as Artist in Residence at @broughtonsanctuary by @broughtonsanctuary

Our Lady of the Woods… my current work in progress over the recent weeks as artist in residence @broughtonsanctuary This will be a space for prayer and reflection within the Cosmic Garden, a magical little woodland in the heart of the estate. I hope that it will serve as a place for connection with nature and with the spirits of the land, encouraging a sense of calm and peace within.Made using “waste” clay-rich soil leftover from a recently dug pond on site, reclaimed wood and stone, and coppiced hazel and willow.Every day on a sculpture build tends to start with a meditation, a listening practice to connect with the land and the prayer of becoming a vessel for God/spirit to work through me. Letting the clay use my hands to reform her body into a new shape. Broughton Sanctuary is a truly magical place; one of the most multifaceted spaces I’ve been to, which is working towards the greater good for people and planet on so many different levels. Rewilding on a huge scale, hosting transformational retreats, thought leaders and internationally renowned experts and creatives across a number of fields. Healthy, organic food. Free nature connection and community events. A beautiful wellbeing centre. Old buildings being conserved and restored sensitively and with love. It’s heartwarming to see a genuine force for good, and spending time here (as with most of the places I’m blessed to be invited to create in) gives me hope for the future of the world. With many thanks to Roger & Paris for the invite and the trust, and to various members of the on site team who have assisted me so far! by @broughtonsanctuary
