🧡 Love and sex in the South Asian diaspora
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I was so grateful to be apart of this intimate, and intentionally curated event by the founder of Brown Bodies - @anisah_ob Brown Bodies is a platform that features stories of the South Asian diaspora from our own voices. Anisah identified a problem that existed within the South Asian diaspora, and took it upon herself to bring about change in talking about sex, relationships and love, and how it impacts us.

Asking ourselves how do we view it, what have we heard about these things growing up, and how do they paint the lens on how we see the world?

Anisah is extremely meticulous, intentional and gracious with this space, and it’s been an absolute pleasure supporting her in bringing this event to light.

She invited @sunny.lb1 from @latebloomerseries , and myself to share our perspectives on this topic. Sunny chatted about the lessons he learnt about intimacy growing up, how that’s changed his relationship to love and sex now, and how that impacts the stories he tells, and characters he plays. I shared my perspectives on how this shapes how we see the world, and the themes I see in my work as a therapist.

If you’ve watched Late Bloomer, or know Sunny, you know that the room continued to erupt in laughter through his candidness, transparency, and relatability regarding his life experiences. He has the ability to make you feel as though you’ve got nothing to hide, and nothing to be ashamed of.

Here’s a little snippet of the event, if you’re interested in future events, writings, and supporting Brown Bodies, the experiences shared on the blog is a great place to start! See if it resonates with you, and why it’s important to share this space with others.

Also the chai at @mayilcoffee was incredible, a big thank you to their team for the space, and delish snacks. And most importantly thank you to everyone who showed up!! You make experiences like these possible:) 🥰 taken in Mayil Coffee by @brown.bodies

If you’ve watched @cravecanada @latebloomerseries , the brainchild of Youtuber @jusreign , you’ll be familiar with Sunny — Jus’ character’s best friend. The funny, real, gritty, and standout favourite for many is played by @sunny.lb1 — our guest for the next Brown Bodies Live!

📆 16 April, 7.30pm
📍Toronto

In the run up to Late Bloomer season three coming out on April 24th, I’m excited to chat to Sunny about the lessons he learnt about intimacy growing up, how that’s changed his relationship to love and sex now, and how that impacts the stories he tells and characters he plays.

We’ll be at @mayilcoffee — the South Indian coffee house — so, of course, your ticket includes a cup of coffee or masala tea.

Tickets in bio!

Moving on means mourning yourself too 💔

'Breakups, over time, become less about losing the other person, and more about losing the version of yourself you were with them. That when a relationship ends, it’s not just the couple that dissolves — it’s the you they brought to life. And that version never returns.'

— @nishadsanzagiri

Summer’s here and I’ve let my mind wander to the magical notion that is a summer romance.

I’m a sucker for summer love. The thoughts of heartbreak and despair? Long gone.

Instead, I'm thinking about new love in the sun, slow dinners on never ending evenings, giggles as ice creams melt down fingers, lazy mornings when food and drink are forgotten, long hot walks with iced coffees, dancing, passion, joy.

So, of course, I wrote about it 🌝

Meet @rez_rahman_ — this week’s Brown Bodies guest writer.

Born and raised in East London with Bangladeshi roots, Rez is a writer, chef, and creative entrepreneur.

Today, she runs @roti.mamiii — a Bengali pop-up inspired by her passion for heritage, comfort food and the stories that live within our kitchens.

Alongside her culinary endeavours, Rez writes about the intersections of food, love and travel on her Substack, Rezervations. She’s a lover girl who loves love — her stories about her romantic forays are a shot of optimism.

Sx therapy is slowly gaining public awareness — Netflix’s Sex Education definitely went a long way in making the case for it!

What I found very hit and miss in my journey with it was the lack of understanding of culture. There was this feeling I had of being pitied — and I’ve had to explain that we don’t all hate our faith or culture, nor want to rebel from it.

Then, I found a therapist that truly got it. She was brown, brought up Muslim and saw all of me. Without judgement. Without questioning my contradictions.

For sx therapy to be truly inclusive, its frameworks must be decolonised — and that has to start at the very beginning of psychology curriculums.

Someone doesn’t have to be ripping your clothes off this weekend for you to enjoy a Valentine’s filled with love.

Let your platonic relationships fill your heart to the brim, whether you’re in a romantic coupling or not. Revel in their magic. And if you didn’t get around to it this weekend, that’s fine. We don’t need a day, with a weird baby angel thing with a bow and arrow as its ambassador to tell us to show our people we love them. And for those of you who are ripping clothes off, I love that for you.

I was so excited to find @hopelessromanticbooks on a bloody cold and snowy afternoon in the city. It’s such a cute store, the music is on point and they’ve really thought about curation — it feels very inclusive of all tastes and interests.

The genre of romantasy has really taken off recently. People love the world building, the blending of romance and adventure, and — the part people enjoy most — well…🌶️🌶️

TikTok / #booktok has played a huge role in normalising erotic reading experiences. Just go search for #ACOTAR (the short form for the book series A Court of Thorn and Roses that people are OBSESSED with) and you’ll find all the chat about the spicy scenes, fan art and more.

Although it’s not marketed as an alternative to p🙃rn, it’s fascinating to hear people say this is how they’ve learnt to explore what they like and their fantasies. There are exciting build ups and storytelling, it’s nuanced, it’s more inclusive, there are emotional connections.

Although I do love a good romance novel, I’m yet to read anything in the sub genre. I’m slowly compiling a list of ones written by South Asians or featuring S Asians protagonists. I’ll share it at some point!

Anyone fancy reading something with me!? taken in stackt by @brown.bodies
