My fourth 50k trail run is in the books. Here's my breakdown. Pluses:• Weather. Beutiful morning with just a slight chill in the air. Blue skies and sunshine.• Scenery. Top notch. Lots of river views, waterfalls, lush forest, and foot bridges.• Aid stations. I think there were 6 or 7 in total. This helped break up the distance. Lots of food options and plenty of fluids. My go-to's were the ginger-ale and watermelon.• Volunteers. Not just at aid stations, but wherever there was a busy road crossing or a possible departure from the correct trail. All so friendly and helpful. • Drums. I'm not sure where they were from, but twice along the course we were greeted with a drumline. So unexpected and very cool.• Course markings. Plenty of pink ribbon to reassure me that I was still on the right path.• No falls! That's a big win. There were 5 significant stumbles, but I saved them all!• No gi upset. Another big win!Minuses:• Heat. Though there was ample tree cover, it did warm up pretty quickly out there.• Rock. So much. Maybe it's just me being a wimp, but I do not move quickly on rocky terrain. It made much of the first half of the race un-runnable for me. I really don't know how people do it.• Soreness and stiffness. My back, shoulders and hip flexors were really annoyed with me in those final miles. Ibuprofen at the 5hr point helped, but only so much.I absolutely have to mention how nice it was to have other friends out there on the course. Though we didn't run together, and they finished way ahead of me, it was just nice knowing that other people I knew were sharing the experience. But the ICING ON THE CAKE award goes to my husband, Jim, for being the ultimate support person and best cheer squad. He was there for all of the back half aid stations and, of course, the finish line. Knowing he would be there and looking forward to seeing him, kept me going all the way to the end. I am so grateful for him and thankful he is there for me and loves me, even when I do these crazy things that he really doesn't understand. He's the best♥️I met cut-offs. That's a win. Happy Global Running Day 🌎🏃‍♀️!!Running has brought so many things into my life.Strength. Focus. Discipline. Consistency. Commitment. Escape. Journey. Adventure. Destinations. Travel. Experiences. Joy. Fun. Happiness. Excitement. Giddiness. Laughter. Pain. Struggle. Injury. Frustration. Defeat. Disappointment.Tears.All of these things have had a role in shaping the runner I am today. However, friendship and comradery are the two things that mean the most to me. I have met so many wonderful people along the way, many of whom are now among my best friends. What goes one way one weekend, must go back the other way the next weekend. At least it sounded like a good idea, in theory. At least following one trail keeps it simple. Thanks to my hubby for being my transport - dropping off and picking up, both weekends. Also thanks to CJ, for running a good chunk of the miles with me this morning ( and to Mo, for the entire distance last weekend).
