Detroit 💜 Chicago

From premiering Heaven In Detroit: A Sanctuary of Sound to a sold out theater at the Black Alphabet Film Festival, to being surrounded by love during a special screening with my Adodi brothers at the Adodi Chicago Reunion, to experiencing the Obama Center and Paris in Black at the DuSable Museum, I’m still processing the emotional magnitude of this past weekend, while embracing the immense blessings within the now.

After returning home, what stood out most were the divine, intergenerational connections between Detroit and Chicago. My chosen family and brotherhood. The music, film, art, and legacy that shape my Blackness, my queerness, and my journey. This moment with Heaven, and the impact it continues to make, is no mere coincidence. It’s spiritual.

To share a film honoring Detroit House music and Black queer sanctuaries in Chicago, a city rooted in House music and Black SGL brotherhood, while experiencing the legacy of the Obamas and the Black Parisian Renaissance through an exhibit featuring work by my producer and co-writer Miles N. Reuben. Yeah, the universe was serving some powerful full circle moments.

I’m eternally grateful for the love and support I received, while recognizing the spiritual guidance of my ancestors and loved ones lifting me from beyond. Love you, Ado Yes. Love you, Mom.

Thank you to my entire Heaven In Detroit cast and crew, especially my left and right arms, archival producer Damon “Magic” Percy and producer and co-writer Miles Reuben. Thank you to Black Alphabet Chicago for welcoming Heaven, my Adodi brothers for loving on me when I struggled to love myself, and the DuSable Museum and Danny Dunson for the incredible Paris in Black exhibit.

I’ll close with something I shared during a reflection exercise at the Adodi Chicago Reunion.

“One of my earliest childhood memories was being able to fly freely within my imagination. But while I was still a boy, I had the wings of my imagination stripped away from me and felt the weight of the world flatten me to the ground. As a man, I’m still trying to learn how to fly again.” by @browneyedscribe
