100 years in the making!

Brown Ledge Camp is marking its centennial, and Summer 2027 enrollment is now open!

Set on the banks of Lake Champlain in Colchester, Vermont, Brown Ledge is a residential sleepaway camp for girls ages 10-17.

There is no set daily schedule. Campers choose their own activities every day from a lineup of 18 options, including horseback riding, tennis, sailing, waterskiing, kayaking, archery & riflery, arts & crafts, and theater.

Sessions run 4 or 8 weeks, giving campers real time to dig into whatever they fall in love with.

Returning families can enroll as soon as October 1st. Enrollment for new families begins October 15th.

The full Campfire Chats conversation with Brooks Johnson of Brown Ledge is here!

And this one gets into a few things I think a lot of parents are thinking about right now, especially if your daughter is overscheduled, constantly on a screen, or you’re wondering what she might actually choose to do if nobody handed her a schedule.

Three things we talk about:
1. What happens when girls are trusted to run their own day.
Brown Ledge has operated on “freedom of choice” since 1926. Campers have 17 activities available to them, but they aren’t handed a packed schedule telling them where to be every hour. They decide what they want to do, how long they want to do it, and sometimes that means sitting in the grove reading a book.

2. What an all-girls environment can give girls.
Brooks talks about creating a space where girls can learn, try things and build confidence without feeling pressure to perform for anyone else.

3. What actually happens when you take away the screens and the schedule.
We talk about the first few days of camp, what a real “screen detox” can look like, why boredom isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and what happens when children suddenly have the space to decide what they actually want to do.

And then I ask Brooks a question that I think a lot of parents would ask:

What if I’m paying for camp and I really want my daughter to try more activities, but she keeps choosing the same thing?

His answer was not what I expected. 😂

We also get into the much harder question of giving up four weeks of an already-short summer with your daughter, and Brooks has a pretty powerful perspective on that too.

Do you ever wonder if an all-girls camp might be right for your daughter?

In my conversation with Brooks Johnson of Brown Ledge, we talked about what can feel different about an all-girls camp environment and why that setting can give girls a different kind of space to grow.

His perspective on confidence, pressure and simply having the freedom to make choices for yourself is an interesting one, especially for parents who may be considering an all-girls camp for the first time.

Back to school means Campfire Chats is back too!

And this clip from my conversation with Brooks Johnson of Brown Ledge gets at something I think A LOT (if not 99%) of parents wrestle with.

He talks about a parent saying, essentially, “It’s hard for me to give up four weeks of the summer with my daughter. I want that time with her.”

I get that.

Summer is short. Everyone is busy. And giving up weeks with your child isn’t always an easy decision.

But Brooks asks parents to think about the longer view:

Who do you want your daughter to become? And what experiences can you give her that will help her get there?

He shared the story of a family who sent four daughters to camp. Years later, with all four women now out of college, their dad became emotional talking about what camp had meant to them and the young women they had become.

Sometimes the gift isn’t keeping every week of summer for ourselves.

Sometimes it’s saying, “I believe in you enough to let you go have this experience without me.”

More from my conversation with Brooks Johnson of Brown Ledge coming soon on Campfire Chats.

And this is where the CampNexxus Founding Camp Tour officially began. ❤️

Stop 1: Brown Ledge Camp in Colchester, Vermont!

One of the biggest reasons I wanted to do this tour was because there is only so much you can understand about a camp from a website, photos or social media.

Walking through it is different.

Seeing the cabins. Sitting in the dining hall. Watching what’s happening at the waterfront. Meeting the people. Hearing the stories and traditions. Feeling the energy of the place.

That’s the stuff I wanted to experience firsthand, so I could better understand the camps that are part of CampNexxus and bring parents along with me too.

Brown Ledge was the very first stop, and such a special way to start this summer.

This was the beginning of a lot of miles, a lot of camp roads, a LOT of videos on my phone, and one of my favorite parts of building CampNexxus so far. 😂❤️

Stop 1. Brown Ledge Camp. Vermont.

And the Founding Camp Tour was officially underway!

Get ready for the next few weeks of the behind the scenes!
