POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Meet Annie Louey (@annielouey ) our @brownwomencomedy Regional Tour Producer.

Annie has been doing stand-up since she was 16, alongside building a career in journalism and presenting, so she’s mastered the art of being serious one minute and funny the next.

You might recognise her from ABC’s Back Roads, China Tonight, The Cheap Seats or The Weekly. She’s also a regular on radio around Australia and has performed at some of the country’s biggest comedy gigs, including the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Opening Night Allstars Supershow at the Palais Theatre.

At ASAC, Annie is taking Brown Women Comedy on the road, producing our regional tour and helping bring the program to audiences outside of Melbourne. She also is one of the teachers for our Brown Women Comedy Workshops.

When she’s not working or on stage, you’ll probably find her cycling, baking, out on a nature walk or taking her dog on an adventure.

We’re very glad to have someone who knows the comedy world from both sides of the stage helping us take Brown Women Comedy further 🤎 taken in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by @brownwomencomedy

Meet Zara Grewal ( @zara_grewal_ ), one of the newest members of the ASAC team and our Operations and Systems Consultant.

At ASAC, Zara is helping us navigate a period of change and growth, working behind the scenes on our operations and making sure the way we work can keep up with where we’re going.

She’s particularly drawn to culturally grounded, community-led organisations and building the strong foundations that allow them to do ambitious work.

Zara is the founder of @copperkettleconsulting , where she works at the intersection of AI, operations and strategy, helping growing organisations build the systems and processes they need to run smoothly.

Outside of ASAC, Zara is also active with Queer South Asians of Melbourne (QSAM). And when she’s not thinking about systems and operations, you’ll probably find her painting, cooking or travelling.

We’re very glad to have her on the team🤎 taken in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by @brownwomencomedy

8 weeks ago, these women had never tried stand-up comedy in their life. Yet last weekend they took to the stage at @bunjil_place to a sold out audience and performed 5 mins of material for the very first time.

We are so proud of the journey they have been on, the stories they shared from colourism within the South Asian community to light hearted dating stories and hilarious takes on goldfish.

@brownwomencomedy Workshops and the Up & Comers Showcase has been such an impactful artist development program.

We’re grateful to our partner Bunjil Place for investing in this partnership. taken in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by @brownwomencomedy

Two and a half months ago, all of these women walked into a comedy course doubting their funniness, but came out the other side doing their first gig to 200 people at the magnificent @bunjil_place 🤯😱🎉

As a mentor/facilitator, it was my first experience teaching a weekly course for such an extended time but I learnt so much about how to pass on the tricks of the trade and discovered my teaching style (apparently it’s approachable and chill… maybe too chill? 🤣 Not very Chinese of me.)

Every time the students got a laugh or one of the many applause breaks, I was in the wings wanting to punch the air with joy.

Congrats to the 16 bold, women of colour who gave it a go. They overcame their fears, explored their sense of humour and made so many new besties.

Thank you to @daizymaan for believing in my teaching and MC’ing abilities and for the endless hours of admin and support. We became so in sync we wore the same colour on stage by sheer coincidence ⁉️

Thank you to Bunjil Place for providing all the premium services and facilities we needed.

Follow the BWC page if you’re interested in finding out about future courses 💕

And they were hilarious. They had the room in tears of laughter and resonance.

But it didn’t happen overnight, we worked together for 8 weeks of in person @brownwomencomedy workshops at @bunjil_place - learning the art of standup comedy, script writing, reviews, studying joke structure until they were ready.

We’re so proud of our alumni. They’re going places.

Big love to @bunjil_place for backing this program and giving new comedians a place to start. We’d love to see more councils and venues do the same & invest in artist development.

If you’ve ever wanted to try comedy yourself, join the waitlist for future Brown Women Comedy workshops via the link in bio.

Shoutout to:
@annielouey our facilitator

Meet Rumali Kularatne, ASAC Board Member and a familiar face to many of our members.

Born in Sri Lanka and raised in the United Arab Emirates, Rumali moved to Australia to study a Bachelor of Arts at Monash University, later returning to complete a Master of Education.

Rumali has been part of the ASAC community for a few years now, first as our volunteer Community Manager from 2023 to 2025, before rejoining ASAC in 2026 as a member of the board. You’ll also often find her around the table hosting our member dinners.

Outside of ASAC, Rumali is a Senior Director at @futurewomen , where she leads learning programs focused on women’s leadership, workforce participation and engaging men in gender equity. This includes FW Jobs Academy, which has supported more than 5,000 women to re-enter the workforce.

Before Future Women, she developed and delivered programs at Monash University focused on preventing gender-based violence, furthering gender equity and building inclusion.

When she’s not doing all of the above, you’ll probably find her cooking, reading or acrylic painting.

As an ASAC Board Member, Rumali brings years of experience in community building, gender equity and creating spaces where people feel like they belong.

And if you’ve been meaning to come along to an ASAC member dinner, there’s a good chance Rumali will be there to welcome you. 🤎

We’ll be introducing you to more of the women behind ASAC over the coming weeks. taken in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by @brownwomencomedy

Meet Sita Sargeant our newest board member.

Sita is a social entrepreneur, author, and one of Australia’s leading voices in women’s history. In 2021, she founded @sheshapeshistory, a company making women’s history accessible and engaging through walking tours, digital content, and partnerships with historic sites and cultural institutions. In 2026, she was named the ACT Young Australian of the Year and a Snow Foundation Entrepreneur.

During university Sita’s thesis explored the women who shaped and were shaped by Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s anti-caste movement, examining how gender, religion and caste intersected in India’s fight for social reform.

Sita is Tamil-Australian, with family roots stretching from Tamil Nadu to Indonesia and Australia. She grew up in Canberra before moving to Melbourne in 2025.

As @australiansouthasiancentre Secretary, she brings sharp strategic thinking, strong storytelling skills, a deep commitment to gender equity, and the kind of energy that makes things actually happen.

Over the coming weeks we’ll be introducing you to more of the brilliant women behind ASAC, watch this space. taken in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by @brownwomencomedy

Only 2% of the artists in one of the world’s largest comedy festivals are women of colour*

And that festival happens right here in Australia, Melbourne International Comedy Festival - our country’s largest cultural ticketed event.

Though it’s a global situation, a few years ago a study was released that 99% Edinburgh fringe audiences are white.

So we decided to do something about that and turn our complaining into a solution. Over last 8 weeks we have been running Australia’s first comedy course for women of colour in partnership with @cityofcaseycouncil owned venue @bunjil_place

We worked with the brilliant @annielouey to deliver the training and it’s been so incredible to see these women dedicate themselves to the craft and have so much FUN while they’re at it. From script writing, to clowning to improv the course has covered it all.

So much of the humour draws from lived experience, things that often don’t get spoken about in our community and comedy is a powerful vehicle to make change. That’s why @brownwomencomedy exists.

Come watch 16 women of colour take over the stage and perform on 12 Sep for the very first time.

Link in bio for tickets.
