Real talk: the emotional maturity that competition asks of parents is wild.

If the boys do well I am immediately uncomfortable. It’s knowing that my child winning means someone else’s child (usually a friend’s) didn’t and I suddenly become very aware of how my happiness might be perceived—because I know that there are real feelings when our kids cross that finish line.

Then, on the other hand, if they don’t perform to the capacity I know they can, well, that presents a completely separate, but equally uncomfortable, set of emotions.

As a family, I know we are built for this. But this mom? I feel everything. #momdiaries #motomom #motofam by @brtan

We are so grateful to @kauaiamateurmx x @foxmoto for putting on such a prestigious motocross event and the opportunity to showcase the effort and heart these kids put in—they love this sport!

“He’s like a professional six year old. Like, he’s just really good at being six,” she said.

For reasons I couldn’t comprehend in the moment, my friend’s compliment touched me more than almost any other I’ve received about my children. It felt less about what Aubrey can do, and more about who Aubrey is.

As parents, we are blessed with the enormous honor of raising good people and from the very beginning, we watch our children take shape. We spend so much energy noticing what they’re good at, what they struggle with, what lights them up, and naturally we wonder who they might become someday. Her compliment measured none of that.

She didn’t note his intelligence, name his behavior, or specify his talents. Though those compliments are wonderful too. She wasn’t saying “He’s going to be somebody someday.” She was saying, “He is somebody right now.”

I think there’s a compliment hidden in there for me too. So much of motherhood is spent doing things for our children that don’t produce any obvious accomplishment. So when she said, “He’s just really good at being six,” I think I also heard, “Whatever you’re doing, you’re doing it well.” #momdiaries taken in Ewa Beach, Hawaii by @brtan
