Suriname is on the Northeast coast of South America and for folks in the US, it is a country we likely never heard of during our geography courses in grade school. Due to the colonial legacies of enslavement, indentureship, economic coercion, etc, you will find many different cultures amongst its population - African, Indian, Javanese, Chinese, and Indigenous folks all call it home.

Linguistically, it’s a melting pot with Dutch being the official language, many other recognized languages, and Sranan Tongo being the long standing creole tongue that you’re likely to hear in the streets (or on record, like here!), and musically, it is also a melting pot. Kaseko is the style most associated with Suriname with Calypso and Jazz influences clearly present, and a signature bass drum and rolling snare groove that pushes the music forward.

Here I’m sharing a Calypso by the Happy Boys. The Happy Boys were the backing band of Kaseko star, Lieve Hugo, and this was their first release in 1977 after Hugo’s passing in 1975.

“Akoeba”, the title track of the album, is jazzy, swinging, with great percussion, catchy vocals, and great horns!

Post-independence Angola was a hot bed for musical expression. You had Semba which emerged in the 70s, and the guitar driven Merengue sound of the 60s which was still going strong, but by the end of the decade and into the 80s, they had to make space for a new sound heavily influenced by the Zouk craze (emanating from the French speaking islands of the Caribbean), called Kizomba.

Take a listen to “Tona Kaxi” by the legendary Carlos Burity in the first slide. It’s got those merengue guitars, the driving beat of the Semba (albeit at a slightly slower tempo), and that irresistible Zouk swing that can make even the most ardent wallflower want to move!

Respect the architects. Genius knows no expiration date. Listening to these suites is like peering inside the chambers of the ancient pyramids and wondering how those ideas came to be. I will always beam with pride knowing that this lineage is in my DNA.

This Dutch release combines the 1949 release of Ellington’s “Liberian Suite” with “A Tone Parallel to Harlem” which was written in 1950, though I am not sure which recording this is, although I do believe it to be pre-1955.

Peace to Ms Sharon Cuff who bought this album at King Karol Music Store on 42nd & 6th Ave on a Thursday in 1976 at age 23. by @brucephillips15

My view from behind the decks at @thevinylcon Atlanta where I played a set with sounds from the Black Jazz Records catalog, the Crusaders, Sega music from Reunion Island, Omara Portuando y Celia Cruz, and more…

A sea of music lovers, from new collectors to seasoned vets, representing a multitude of demographics, and whether making new discoveries or crossing long-time wants off lists, all parts contributed to the whole of the experience!

Shouts to @skemerichards for curating a thorough cast of DJs. To all the DJs, I dug every set I heard, thanks for being yourselves and playing the music you love.

It was great to meet new folks and chop it up and connect with others I haven’t seen in a while…until next time!

This album reminds me of train rides to Philly in my late teens, early 20s, hopping on the L, making my way to stores, or sometimes thuggin it out and walking block after block to get to the shops…if I knew what I knew now…but honestly, I don’t get caught up in that because I learned so much on those digs…freestyle caption and I’m out!

Happy National Radio Day!

I had a show, Say It Loud!, on Millersville University’s @wixq 91.7FM for a few semesters. Here’s a throwback to the sole recording of my show in existence!
