I create paintings like this to show what has never been seen, to satisfy a hunger and desire which you never even knew that you had.

After several months of uncertainty and struggle, the canvas (linen) finally came to a conclusion today. My eyes are tired but I am pleased. Certainly, there is a limit, and this work cannot go on forever. by @brucethorn

Sept. 15, 2026. It was an immense honor and pleasure to welcome William Conger to my studio for conversation about art, painting and life. This man is a cultural treasure. @w.conger by @brucethorn

Calling it done, this is the first self portrait I’ve painted in over a quarter century. A few years ago, I drew a life sized silver point selfie that I like a lot. As in most of my paintings, this started out very loose and slap dash, before getting carefully perfected touches.
I’ve been wearing the same bucket hat at the studio everyday to keep the hair out of my face, it’s an alternative to out dated berets that served the same function.

Meet Siki (Her Brown Eyes). This is an oil painting @ 48x84" on hemp linen from a sail maker in Oregon. Swipe for a detail. This major accomplishment was originally exhibited in Chicago. by @brucethorn

The Sick Rose, oil on linen, 20x16". This is from 2020, the Covid era, which we can only hope is now history. I appropriated the title from that wily Englishman, William Blake. Love is a rose, keep it healthy and never allow it to get sick. by @brucethorn

The World Trade Center from the Brooklyn Bridge, with the Jehova's Witness Watchtower building off to the side. This is from 1984 (it was a hot August to be hoofing all over New York) which I gifted to the late Billy Bengston. I don't know if it still exists. by @brucethorn

To succeed as an artist, you do not need tonnes of social media followers and you don’t need to post everyday and have an Instagram or Facebook strategy. You do not need to waste your time at shallow events just to be seen. You do not need to suck up to gate keepers. What you do need is to be authentic and original, do your best work and earn the trust and respect of just a few admirers. Many things that are popular today will be forgotten tomorrow. by @brucethorn

Meanwhile, the earth keeps turning while orbiting the sun, all while moving through the universe. If not for gravity, we would all just float off into space. by @brucethorn
