Abracadabra
Secrets from Houdini to Hans Klok.

In times when confusion is high and the world is under a lot of pressure, we do need to have some magic in our lives.

This past week I was honoured to host alongside Joram Baruch and Annemieke Jonas for the opening of Abracadabra at the Jewish Museum in Amsterdam.

An exhibition about the key role of Jewish illusionists in the development of this form of performing art. Around 1900, magicians and illusionists changed their stage from market squares and funfairs to performances in theatres. With spectacular shows and acts, they became the superstars of their time. 'The Golden Age of Magic' had arrived.
World-famous and iconic magicians like Harry Houdini, Horace Goldin, Alexander Herrmann and Adelaide Herrmann, who after the death of her husband Alexander in 1896 reinvented herself, continued the show and became a magician in her own right, earning her the title "The Queen of Magic" — magic's first female headliner. The world-famous Bamberg family, six generations of professional magicians, starting with Eliaser David Bamberg around the year 1760, a family with over 200 years of magic history. His son David Leendert continued the tradition and served as a court magician. Tobias Leendert "Theo" Bamberg, performing under the stage name Okito, born in Amsterdam in 1875, and even his son David Tobias Bamberg, performing under the stage name Fu Manchu — all part of the family influencing generations of stage magicians.

You'll find them all at the exhibition Abracadabra, an exhibition curated and initiated by the Jewish Museum in close cooperation with Hans Klok, one of our most famous Dutch illusionists at this moment in time. It was after obtaining magic acts once created by his valued inspirator Okito that Hans Klok sprang the idea of creating this exhibition honouring these great names of the past.
