La Venta: A Shared History. Ahead of the World Cup starting tomorrow I have two collages I worked on for a while. One recreating the iconic goalie kit of the legendary Jorge Campos in 1994 for Mexico. The other is a mash up of the kit and the Aaron Douglas illustrated cover of the novel The Blacker the Berry by Wallace Thurman. The novel is about the direct byproduct of systematic racism, colorism and what that does to an individual. Perpetuating it in some instances but mostly navigating it. And the inherent notion of being darker is not a preferred experience on this planet. I choose to cross reference these two images to reference the complicated history around the Olmec heads, many of which were originally housed in San Lorenzo, and La Venta. Now all are on display in a museum in Jalapa. If you looked at them and thought those are African features. You’re right. If you looked at them and thought those are indigenous Latin features. You’re right. It’s both. History repeatedly shows us white power structures do any and everything they can to continue to lie, erase and twist histories to not only make us look and feel inferior but ultimately pit cultures against each other when the truth is we were coexisting before Columbus even lied about getting off that ship and “stepped” on American soil. We all got along because imperialism decimated all of our lands. But look what happens every 4 years. We come together. Look at how Mexico is treating all the players, officials and representatives of each country staying with them during the World Cup and then look at the US. We’ve already had a Somalian referee refused entry to the USA and eventually flown back to his home country. We have players journalists and fans denied, seized and searched. Don’t bid to host the World Cup if you don’t intend to invite the WORLD. What’s really good with white folks?

Made it to 36. “Hallelujah. That means I love you and tonight I’m happy, I’m happy to be here.” Whether I do this full time “professionally” or not doesn’t really matter to me anymore. I rode the bus, I did the thing. I made a way. I’ll always do what I’m meant to do, seen or unseen. Write your vision and make it plain upon tablets. Meadowlark was the inspiration behind most of my thesis work. It was written back then. Today I enshrine myself. Today I am proud by @brvdley

Hey everyone it’s been a while. I’m making this post in the hope I can lean on my community but also offer something as well. I’m looking for work, any work, at least until my class starts back up in the fall at CSU. So if anyone knows of any openings/leads that would be greatly appreciated Los Angeles/Pasadena or remote. I truly don’t care what it is and if I fill out another application on indeed or LinkedIn I will SCREAM🙃. To that end, I know Mother’s Day is next month so I’d like to offer a few commission spots this month for small Mother’s Day portraits. I got bills! Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Should that be something you’re interested in hit me up asap so I can get them done and out before the first week of May. Thank you for your time by @brvdley
