Madeira is a small island in the Atlantic ocean with a lot of things to do.

If you like hiking, this is a perfect island for you, known for their famous hikes. Hike PR1 across the ridges between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, past the famous Stairway to Heaven, or take on PR8 for cliffside coastal views. Want flatter ground? Fanal Forest’s ancient laurels and mist are worth the walk on their own.

Beyond hiking, it’s one of Europe’s best spots for whale and dolphin watching, plus canyoning, natural volcanic pools, black sand beaches, and colourful towns like Funchal.

Mountains, forest, cliffs, ocean, all in one small island.

Seixal 🖤

North coast, easy to miss on a map, but this one small village packs in a black sand beach, a lava rock arch, and a waterfall pouring straight into the ocean. Genuinely feels different from the rest of Madeira.

The beach here is one of the only sandy ones on the island, soft black volcanic sand with a small waterfall on one end and green cliffs towering behind. A few minutes away, the natural pools sit under a thick lava rock arch, quieter and less touristy than Porto Moniz. And just outside town, Véu da Noiva waterfall drops 110m straight into the Atlantic ocean, visible from a viewpoint right off the road.

Go early. Sunrise here hits different with the light on the cliffs, and the parking is small and fills up fast.

PR 8 — Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço ⛰️🌊

Totally different vibe from PR 1, no clouds, no peaks, just red volcanic cliffs, an exposed ridge, and the Atlantic ocean on both sides. You’re on the most eastern tip of the island here.

About 7km round trip, 2-4 hours depending on stops , mostly easy walking with some ups and downs, plus a steep final push up stairs to the best viewpoint at the end. It’s fully exposed with strong wind and zero shade, so it can be hot out there.

Bring proper shoes and plenty of water, this one’s popular for a reason.

PR 1 — Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo⛰️🌄

One of the most talked-about hikes in Europe, and it lives up to it. You’re on a narrow ridge between two of Madeira’s highest peaks, walking through clouds instead of under them, with Ninho da Manta viewpoint about halfway and the “stairway to heaven” after that.

Around 7km one way, 3-4 hours depending on stops. Go early to beat the clouds rolling in, bring layers (it’s cold up top even when Funchal’s warm), and a light for the tunnels along the way.

If you only do one hike here, make it this one.

Porto Moniz Natural Pools 🌊

No sand, no waves, just lava rock pools filled straight from the Atlantic ocean on every tide. This is basically how swimming works on Madeira since there aren’t a lot of sandy beaches on the island.

You get two options a few minutes apart. The paid pools (small entry fee) are the polished version, smoothed rock, proper stairs into the water, changing rooms and lifeguards. Walk a bit further east past the old fort and you hit the free pools, completely raw, just black volcanic rock and however you manage to climb in yourself. Bring water shoes for that one, the rock’s sharp in places.

Bring a snorkel mask if you have one, small fish drift in with the current.

This is PR1.2 in Madeira ☁️

You don’t need to commit to the full Areeiro–Ruivo hike to get one of Madeira’s best views. The first stretch of PR 1 gets you to Ninho da Manta. a lookout platform looking over the peaks stacked out in front of you and clouds sitting below. Push on a bit further and you hit the start of the “Stairway to Heaven,” where the path narrows into the ridge stairs Madeira’s famous for.

About 1.2km, mostly paved, 20-30 min at an easy pace. Everyone chases sunrise so it gets busy and cold before dawn, but sunset is way less crowded. You get the same views, golden light, and no lines for photos. Bring a jacket, it’s windier and colder up here than it looks from Funchal. Especially when the sun sets.

A perfect short walk if you want the payoff without the full 3-4 hour hike.

This is Madeira, a small island in the Atlantic Ocean. It has plenty of activities to offer, like whale watching, beaches and hiking.

Some of the island’s most popular hikes are PR1 (Vereda do Areeiro), which takes you along dramatic mountain ridges between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo. You will pass the stairway to heaven, high above the clouds. PR8 (Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço), is famous for its unreal coastal views.

If you prefer flatter grounds, Fanal Forest is worth visiting for its ancient laurel trees and misty landscapes that feel almost unreal.

Beyond hiking, Madeira is one of the best places in Europe for dolphin and whale watching, with tours running year-round. You can also go canyoning, swim in natural volcanic pools, explore black sand beaches, or wander through colourful towns like Funchal.

Despite its small size, Madeira has a surprising variety of landscapes, so you can fit mountains, forests, cliffs, beaches, and the ocean into the same trip. If you’re planning a holiday that mixes adventure with time to relax, it’s an easy destination to add to your list.

Have you been to Madeira, or is it still on your travel list?
