Seventh time teaching a workshop at a University. First time I felt ready. The first six, I think I was performing the job. Showing the work, answering the questions, getting through it. This round — Howard, then Miami the week after — something shifted. I stopped presenting and started talking. Which is all the students actually wanted. Turns out that's the part I like most. Not the lecture. The conversation after, when somebody asks a question about a problem they're stuck on, and you get to think it through together. Thank you to @canonusa and their EDU initiative for putting working professionals in the room with students who will soon be our peers. Thank you to @howard1867 and the @univmiami for having me. And thank you to the students at Miami who cut this recap. I’ve been diving back into my learning and research, giving the Canon C500 mk1—an old favorite—another look. As always, I like to take a photo walk with any camera I’m testing in natural daylight to get a feel for the camera and system in my hands. It’s surprising how we intuitively adapt our workflow based on the camera system. I’ve always dreamed of shooting with the Canon C500 when it first came out in October 2012. Back then, our budgets kept us in the C300 mk1 range, but we were perfectly content. I’ve really missed how comfortable this camera series feels. It’s so flexible in your hand, with a sharp, tactical eyepiece that lets you see clearly in any situation. It makes it easy to focus on the photography itself. I absolutely loved shooting handheld and looking through that eyepiece today. A big thank you to @canonusa for sending the Canon C500 MK1 for testing. This is just the start of my testing, but I’m really excited about what I’m finding. I’ve posted a few images from my walk today. I'm honored and excited to join Canon's Explorers of Light, an initiative started in 1995 to celebrate outstanding professional image creators. My relationship with Canon began very early in my career, with the first digital camera I ever owned. Canon's ability to produce high-quality video-capable tools at a fraction of the cost enabled many of us to start careers, and with that camera, I learned the foundational blocks of cinematography. Since then, I've used @canonusa products on several occasions throughout my career, and I look forward to continuing that practice. I am honored to join the instructor staff of Photo Creators 2026, a conference created and led by photographer extraordinaire Roberto Valanezuela. This event will take place at the beautiful Tanque Verde Ranch in Tucson, Arizona.   At the conference, students will gain hands-on field experience working with professionals. In my class, I will focus on planning, structuring, and creating a promotional video. As video and photo creators are being forced to expand their offerings, I hope to empower my students with the tools they need to succeed in today’s marketplace.
