“Nunca cambies tu ser” is a phrase I’ve always lived by. Simple yet meaningful words that my grandma always used to tell me.

I’ve been sitting here in my grandma’s living room for an hour struggling to find the right words to honor her. Truth is, there aren’t enough words or photos to tell everyone how much I loved her, how much I STILL love her.

I grew up with her by my side, thanks to her I’m full of so much love, patience, strength, kindness, and most importantly resilience. The same resilience I’ve been using in these hard times.

When my grandma lived in New York, we would do everything together! She would pick me up from school, we’d get chinese food together, I’d do my homework, then we’d watch TV shows in English and not understand a single word, but we’d laugh together whenever we would hear the laugh track. She would read me stories, sing me songs, make me soup, make me laugh, cry, smile, and everything in between. I cherish my childhood SO much because of her.

She left New York in 2012, I experienced heartbreak for the first time. After being by her side for 12 years, I couldn’t understand why she had to go back home to Bolivia. I’m feeling similar feelings right now…but using the bravery that she taught me, I’m staying strong. I know she wouldn’t want to see me crumble.

Mami Viki, te amo con todo mi corazón. I’ve told you this every summer that I would come to visit since 2016. I’ve told you every weekend when my mom and I would buy Boss Revolution calling cards to call you. I told you the last time that I saw you how much I loved you, and that same love will never EVER fade away. Thank you for building me up and for giving me the best years of my life.
