When i was 19 years old I was taking lessons from Rich Brotherton at his house in Austin. I would lug my Yamaha hard case over there (didn’t know what a gig bag was, I thought that was pretty advanced) and he’d blow my mind for around an hour a week. Then I’d go home and practice for a week and come back and show him how shi##y I could play. It was great, he never judged, just a consistent force for good in my life. He’d frequently answer the door barefoot in shorts and t shirt and we’d go downstairs to the guitar room.

One day Rich came in and said “Brian, this is our last lesson.” I thought “oh no I must be a really bad student, I’ll try harder” but instead I said “really?” He told me he got hired to go on the road with Robert Earl Keen. The next time I saw him it was at a gig and he gave me a big hug.

I still think of Rich teaching me the Front Porch Song and how proud I was for being able to split the middle with one finger on my E minor. You can do it, its true.

BRYAN JACK — STATE OF THE UNION
When I released The Marfa Drive in March, I was drinking from a firehose. I had no idea how much work it takes just to get music heard.

I was told no a lot. I’m still told no a lot. Sometimes I think the system is rigged.

Years ago, a sales manager told me: “I don’t need you to find the 100 people who say no. I need you to find the 3 who say yes.”

I needed to find my people.

So I started digging into roots, community, college and Americana radio and reaching out directly to stations and programmers around the country.

65 stations said yes since June.

What surprised me most was where the early listeners showed up: Northern California. Colorado. New England. Four stations in Vermont alone.

There’s something happening out there.
I’ve developed a huge appreciation for the DJs, programmers and independent stations still making space for songs they believe in. In a world with more noise than ever, I think music matters more than ever.

Songwriting matters.

So where am I now?
I’m making another record—partly at Signal Hill and partly in my own studio. Some of those new songs are already finding their way into the live set.
I’m working toward listening-room runs through Northern California and New England over the next six-ish months, with Colorado in my sights next year.

But first: Austin.

I’ve been working hard on this one and would love to fill the room with friends, listeners, musicians and anyone who gives a damn about songs.

Six months ago, I was trying to figure out how any of this worked.
I still am.
But I’m finding my people.
65 yeses later, the road is starting to show itself.
Lots more to learn. Lots more to do.
