Call me nostalgic, but I decided to finish out “Hawksbill Station” the same way I read it when I was 10 years old; a hard back, book club edition with the same offset dust jacket!

You know, I really viewed this 1968 novella as a hold over from the fifties, stifling, conservative era but with largely communist leanings of the day. I view it in a much different light now than I did when I was 10 years old, which was more as a simple time travel story. It’s far more than that and it’s very politically charged. The author, the great and prolific Robert Silverberg, has given the book a liberal, Jewish flavor from the mid-century. Just my take on it, though. The politics in it are more timely today than they ever were, regardless if you’re on the left or the right.

This masterpiece is highly recommended as a great science fiction story and a politically charged thriller. I love it when a book that you read in your youth isn’t as good as you remember it; it’s even better. 👍

Another round of edits on my next novel to be published in December called “Applause”. I’m on my sixth draft.

It’s all about my experiences in working in the Hollywood film industry, some good and some absolutely atrocious. All the characters are largely based on real people that I dealt with so a few people may seem unpleasantly familiar.

I hope you dig it.

Tonight‘s reading; “Hawksbill Station“ by the great and prolific Robert Silverberg.

My mother told me that I would like this excellent science fiction novel when I was about 10 years old and I dutifully read it, not realizing what an intensely nihilistic, political novel that it really was. I’ve reread this several times over the years and picked it up again tonight, having forgotten what an excellent commentary it is on loneliness, desperation and just how genuinely good science-fiction can be when it’s politically charged and a commentary on the human condition.

I know I look a lot older than I was at 10 years old when I first read this, but then again, so do you. 😉

I sure hope you guys and gals have dug my books so far. I’m not sure what type of stories I’m writing, but I think they can be called “urban noir”….modern day tragedies that take place in Los Angeles. Unlike a Vietnamese massage parlor, there are no happy endings here.

Some of you have even been nice enough to compare my books to Raymond Chandler and James Ellroy. I hope I can live up to that. 👍

I’ll never forget the way I felt when I was 20 years old and living in my car before I had made my mark in my chosen career of being a sculptor.

It was cold, it got dark early and I hadn’t eaten in about a week. All I had was the belief in myself that somehow, in some way, I could get where I wanted to in my life if I worked hard enough.....I just didn’t know how to then. Very few people helped me because I brought nothing to the table. I don’t blame them. The low point came when I ate a packet a BBQ Chicken Shake-N-Bake coating powder under a streetlight, crying the whole time and feeling like the biggest failure ever. That’s all there was. Not my brightest, shining moment, I can assure you.

The only thing that I had to my name was a battered old paperback copy of “The Talisman” by Peter Straub and Stephen King. It was my one escape.....to read about a young man’s adventures in overcoming incredible obstacles and impossible odds. I loved that book. Eventually I got a job like all driven and focused young men and women do and pulled myself out of a very bad situation that could easily have ended in disaster.

Over the years, Peter Straub gave me unparalleled kindness and supported all of my bronze bust projects to celebrate the great authors of our time. A fellow pipe smoker, he also sent me some very rare pipe tobacco….half a dozen tins of the coveted “Frog Morton” latakia.....ambrosia from the Gods of the Briar. Good luck finding any. Chances are good that you won’t.

In those dark times so many years ago, if you had told me that one day the man who unintentionally lit the way out of the darkness with his own art, his own muse, his own fine example....and would one day become a treasured friend, I wouldn’t have believed you for a second.

I finally got a chance to thank him in person in Providence over dinner, although I recall that words truly failed me at the moment. I was with my beautiful daughter Chloe and it was an honor to introduce them to each other...two people who meant so much to me in very, very different ways.

I am a lucky, lucky man.

Been feeling a little isolated in my head lately so last night I threw on a suit and hung out with some old friends and made some new ones!

My pal John Godin @johnnyfedora1961 owns the Grasshopper bar here in Long Beach and it’s truly a great noir watering hole if that’s your jam. John was an excellent host to the @artdeco_la “cocktails in historic places“ last night, and he deserves all the applause in the world. Catching up with my old pal Brandon Jacobson @slickbrandon1955 was a special treat and making new friends with @vlenin1994 and @jeffreypaulbeautyofficial was awesome! Sometimes you just gotta put on a suit and roll in with your ‘49 Ford to set the world right again in your head, dig? Damn good times, thank you boys! ❤️
