An Apex of Demise | mixed media installation, oil stick on canvas, enamel paint, nori paste, staples, oil dipped and spray painted chains, road sign | 250 X 115 | 2024
•
An Apex of Demise depicts a wrecked Subaru world rally car livery where each car part is displaced to create the final composition. The patchwork canvas, draped across the floor, is shaped to resemble the remains of an accident. Tire markings as hand gestures using a melted race-worn tire that reads as an oil spill. Utilizing an achromatic palette of black and white, I navigate the complexities of life, with each color serving as a symbolic expression of my inner turmoil. Black represents death, dread, and the void, while white offers a stark contrast to convey the depths of my uncertainty. Like a checkered flag waving at the finish line, the use of black and white switches back and forth in my work like the binary representations of good and evil, right or wrong, and victory or defeat. taken in Portland, Oregon by @brycefrimming

Residual Motion: An archival component of Auto Racing as Existential Thought.

I approach this collection as both research and a record of my ongoing relationship with Motorsport. I photograph cars, trucks and motorcycles at local shows, museums and events, documenting details through both digital and film photography, while increasingly using short-form video to record movement, sound, and atmosphere. My physical archive of books, racing publications, racing ephemera, and car manuals works alongside this visual documentation, providing historical and technical references as well as aesthetic inspiration. I continually return to this archive when developing my paintings and writing.

This archival practice is an important part of how Auto Racing as Existential Thought continues to develop. I am beginning to share portions of this growing archive through Instagram and soon, my website. Using these platforms as public-facing extensions of my research and field documentation. For now, these photographs and videos provide a way to share the ongoing process behind the paintings and writing while creating a living record of my encounters with motorsport and automotive culture.
