Day 18: What About Love? - Heart🩷
*20 Days of American Music*

There’s a reason Love is the most common subject of song (or any art for that matter…)
Ann and Nancy Wilson made a hit in 1985 with this power ballad, which I think perfectly encapsulates that mid-Eighties rock era.
Some things are just that simple: sing your heart out about love & rock a sweet solo on guitaršŸŽø

Day 2: Badfish - SublimešŸŒžšŸ³

Yesterday’s was an East Coast tune from ā€˜61, and today is from the West (best) Coast in 1992. Sublime took ska-rock to sunny Long Beach, CA, and changed the alternative ā€œbeach popā€ sound for a generation.

Ska is a genre from Jamaica which evolved into RockSteady and the more-famous Reggae. Badfish is one example of another American nation’s music influencing and infiltrating pop music in the United States. šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡² #ska #sublime #badfish #semiquincentennial #america250 taken in Desert Shores by @brycerogers6

No 20: Man in the MirroršŸŖž- Michael Jackson
*20 Days of American Music*

I vividly remember the day MJ died, and it shocked the world like no other celebrity death had. A little over 17 years ago, June 25th of 2009, the world stopped and mourned and listened to his words.
He was gearing up for the ā€œThis is Itā€ tour, supposedly a final lap around the world he had undoubtedly influenced. The biggest pop music star in history died.

Michael was not a perfect person, as we all are, and it’s inexcusable (yet must be mentioned) that he had inappropriate contact with minors. But this brings up an important discussion we often have in music: Can and should we separate the art from the artist?

In my opinion, yes, but that does not mean we should exonerate the artist from their flaws as a person in society. This is why it’s dangerous to idolize celebrities. Even the people we look up to the most are broken and sullied in many ways. This does not take away from the impacts they may have in other aspects of their career.

ā€œMan in the Mirrorā€ was the MJ song that skyrocketed to Number 1 posthumously and stayed there for weeks.
Why? Because it hits exactly on the issue we all grapple with:
How can I make a positive change in the world if I don’t first look inward myself?

The mirror is an object of reflection— but not the instrument of change;
You, the person in the mirror, have the agency in your life to grow and be a better human.
So, as Michael whispers at the end of the song, ā€œmake that change.ā€

No. 19: Dreams - Fleetwood MacšŸ˜“šŸ’
*20 Days of American Music*

Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham are one of the all-time songwriting duos, but it was well-known they frequently feuded and wrote songs directly about each other.
That tension and drama may have galvanized the success of Rumours, which became a top five best-selling album of all time.

Stevie’s songs always resonated with me the most because they put you under a trance-like spell. Crisp diction and vivid emotion invite you into the story. But it’s the feeling you come away with that pulls on your heart strings.

No. 17: Atlantic City - Bruce Springsteen
*20 Days of American Music*

Chronicled in the film ā€œDeliver Me From Nowhereā€, Springsteen originally wrote his album Nebraska alongside many of the later Born in the USA songs as a series of home demos using a four-track recorder.
Luckily, practically everything on Nebraska made it raw on the vinyl, and it shines as an example of an artist going bare-bones in spite of the Big Music label’s wishes to polish everything.

The album peaked at No. 3, his second best selling record up til that point. It was proof that people are fascinated by the home-recorded, cozy sound of a songwriter in their native element.

ā€œAtlantic Cityā€ is the lone single off that LP, like a ruby-red wax seal on a love letter to the American Experience. In a lot of ways, Atlantic City’s gambling and tourism history parallels that of Las Vegas. Especially around the Bicentennial era of the USA, the Mafia/Mob controlled many aspects of the city’s economy and public life.
The trouble and the Chicken Man (Philly mob boss) mentioned at the beginning refer to organized crime running rampant. Still, a common person with immense debt and ā€œno outsā€ is highly susceptible to turning to less-honorable affairs to make ends meet.

The chorus says to me, in so many words, Times may fall hard, but let’s not forget to live a little in the meantimešŸŽ°

Day 16: Better Wild - Sierra SpiritšŸŽ
*20 Days of American Music*

Today I’m givin flowers to a contemporary Native American artist @sierraspirit who I discovered last year on a playlist of all native and first-nations music acts.
ā€œBetter Wildā€ really resonated with me because the writing hits on a set of tender feelings: Being away from someone who you know is growing distant as the days go on. Not knowing if they’ll return from cowboy escapades.
A mustang is meant to run wild, and it’s better to know early if your lover would rather be saddled up or free as a bee.

Day 15: When You Were Young - The KillersšŸ—”ļø
*20 Days of American Music*

Wanted to pay homage to arguably the greatest rock band from my hometown of Las Vegas. The Killers are responsible for some era defining music.

Brandon Flowers and the band started out performing small local gigs across the valley and carved out a niche that was just big enough to wedge their sound into the mainstream. It wasn’t pop or punk, but it overlapped with the audiences. In some ways they were post-Foo Fighters and post-Coldplay, but grew into the public consciousness at the same time.
Flowers cites U2, Elvis and of course Bruce Springsteen as songwriting influences…There’s also something so uniquely Vegas and uniquely ā€œThe Killersā€ about the way their sonics and imagery weave together a portrait of the city life and the character of urban Nevada.

Day 14: Ain’t it Fun - ParamorešŸ¦‹
*20 Days of American Music*

Hayley Williams might be the quintessential songwriter to represent the emo pop-punk era. Her work as the front-woman of Paramore is equal parts raw and soulful as it is rock-hard and polished.
One of the sustaining acts of the 21st century, they produced hit records and toured over two decades.
This song is a reminder not to get too big for your britches. Remain humble and focus on yourself!

No. 13: I Got a Name - Jim Croce 🌲
*20 Days of American Music*

Chose to cover this one on Fathers’ Day for obvious reasons (listen to the lyrics).
My dad showed me Jim Croce at a young age and it resonated instantly.
A singer-songwriter who blended folk, americana, soft rock and pure storytelling — Croce sang wonderful, real songs until he tragically passed in an aviation accident.
My favorite stanza from this song goes:
ā€œLike the fool I am and I’ll always be, I’ve got a dream.
They can change their minds, but they can’t change me.ā€
