dear swimming

after 16 years of early mornings, late nights, meets, practices, lifting, traveling, hotel stays, bus rides, tech suits, broken caps, and foggy goggles it has come to an end. it feels weird to write those words. for as long as i can remember swimming wasn’t just a part of my life it was the structure of it. i cannot say thank you enough to my family, friends, teammates, coaches, and trainers who were there for every step of this journey. because of this sport, i have made endless memories and built friendships that will stay with me long after my last race. thank you to all of my teammates over the years for pushing me both in and out of the pool, for the encouragement during the hard sets, and for every laugh that made the tough times bearable.

after countless hours in the pool staring at a black line, hundreds of hours of lifting, 2 cortisone shots and a torn labrum, this chapter in my life has come to an end. swimming was never just about the records, the all american awards, being a national qualifier, or being an all conference athlete. It was never just a sport, meet, or event to me. it was home. it was where i learned to push through pain, how to fail and get back up, and how to keep going when i thought i had nothing left.

i cannot say thank you enough to my parents for tossing me into the pool when i was 6 years old. that simple decision ended up shaping so much of who i am today. thank you for driving me to early morning practices and meets for over a decade, for sitting through countless swim lessons and practices, wiping my tears away, talking me through the hard times, and always believing in me when i doubted myself. And of course thank you for paying for more tech suits than i can count 😉

thank you, swimming, for everything. for the memories, lessons, the people, and the moments i will carry with me forever. i may be stepping away from the pool but the impact this sport had on my life will never leave me! by @bryn.kiley
